Race Shift On A 996

Discussion in 'Technical Help' started by shakeys dad, Jul 18, 2022.

  1. Has anyone put there 996 to race shift, and what's involved. My other bikes are race shift, so want my 996 converting also, just so it's not confusing. It has standard rearsets. Does anyone now if it is relatively easy to do

  2. Not done it but one can get a shift lever that bolts directly to the gear shift shaft which then makes it 1 up 5 down.

  3. Direct lever. Done. Or spin the one you have upside down.

  4. Cheap gear lever and job jobbed.

  6. find some dp rear sets or copies and fit a direct lever.

  7. As above a lever that fits directly onto the gearshifter shaft does the job nicely also can make the shift a little more positive as there's less chance of play in the linkage.

My 916 has been like this for years but when I tried the same on the Monster, the direct shift lever was too long (footpegs are further forwards), I tried a shorter lever which fit OK but the shift was awkward as the shorter lever gives less leverage making shifting stiff and with a tendency to not 'click in' right so I flipped over the small lever on the standard shift so that it now sits above rather than below the shaft and that reverses the pattern.

Only thing on a 916/996 etc. IIRC is that the short lever has a 'dog-leg' in it (to get the shift further in for the narrower set footpegs) that might not fit above the shaft (fouls the casing) so you need to get a straight version as per SS/Monster?

Also some bikes fairings (999 IIRC) are more 'fitted' around the gear lever and so a straight direct-shift lever can foul the fairing but you can get a curved one for this setup.
