Dear Santa….. £5.6k p/hr is a fair old wedge but it costs an absolute fortune to keep them flying. I was listening to one of Al Murray's (The Pub Landlord and WW2 historian) "We Have Ways..." podcasts recently in which him and his co-host, historian James Holland, visited Goodwood and interviewed the plane's owner and/or engineer. Apparently no two Spitfires are the same as, IIRC, the wings and airframe were handmade and parts often need to be machined from scratch, the planes were only designed to last for 200 flying hours and the Merlin engines need a £100k rebuild every 500 hours even when the display pilots are only tickling the throttle. The 27 litre engine also guzzles a gallon of 150 RON fuel per minute! Then there's the cost of insuring an 80 year old £2m flying museum exhibit which carries high net worth individuals as paying passengers......
As one who has been fortunate enough to be bought a flight as a birthday present, it is worth every penny, something you will remember for the whole of your life.
