Hi all, after recently selling a Yamaha r1 4xv, I’m looking for a replacement, I’ve always liked the rd400’s, so this eBay example caught my eye I’ve spoken to the owner, sounds like a genuine chap, he’s thinning down his collection This one he’s had just over 18 months, receipt for an engine re build, crank , rebore etc New tyres & apparently’ the bike has highly sought after exhausts fitted ?? Couple of previous mot’s, that’s about all the paperwork. It is a uk bike & has matching frame / engine numbers He’s not willing to move on the £7.5k price, as he feels it’s very fair Can I have your opinions please, I’m pretty keen on it Steve https://rover.ebay.com/rover/0/0/0?mpre=https://www.ebay.co.uk/ulk/itm/223063106245
Looks pretty good tbh and the later models with electronic ignition seem to be the pick of the 400’s but I’m no expert. He’s selling some tasty stuff so obviously not shot of a bob or two. Getting quite rare now and projects are 5k plus so although it seems like a lot of money everything would appear to have been done.
It's a nice bike and will probably holdings value but being realistic it has rubbish suspension and brakes and that's ok as long I as you go into it with your eyes open - good luck
By rubbish suspension and brakes do you mean mid to late 1970s suspension and brakes? @Justatad if you go ahead and buy it, enjoy it. They are of my time as a teenager and I always wanted one but never did get one, but they bring back happy memories of the era.
I can't find one at 9k in the completed ebay sales he mentions but did find this one that sold , a 79 also with a engine rebuild and also a dream machine respray matching numbers at £6,050 https://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/Yamaha-R...114228?hash=item3f99227e34:g:JsAAAOSw52ZazPfJ there is also this one at what is recognised as a mint but expensive shop in sheffield, the bike specialists https://www.autotrader.co.uk/classi...stcode=cm186an&radius=1501&make=YAMAHA&page=1 His collection seems to be more of a buying and selling business according to his feedback and over some time. Ultimately it's your money and no one else's. I'd be surprised if it sold at that price but if I had to have it, I would wack in an offer you think you want to pay, leave your number and be patient Another option is go into some of the rd forums and ask if anyone knows the bike???
I had one back in the day, brings back great memories. Lovely machines and that one looks practically concours. Working for Cosworth (the F1 company) at the time, I tuned mine to destruction. The only crappy point I remember was oil weeps (unburn two stroke oil) from the rubber sleeve connecting the down pipes and exhaust silencers.
It's a nice bike but it's £2/3k overpriced I'm more into Suzuki 2 Strokes and know from experience there's some silly prices being asked
Personally, I think it's a bit overpriced, I would think more circa 5 - 6k. If you look at his Z900, he says in the advert, "price reduced as I really want to sell some of my bikes" so I reckon there's some easy negotiation there ?? PS. His guitar collection is a bit overpriced to. I might bid him on the 59 Burst Les Paul, but not at bloody 5k though.....
I might be wrong, but it looks like it's back on... https://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/yamaha-R...m=192601416927&_trksid=p2047675.c100009.m1982

I am certainly no expert but aren't these editions thought to be the holy grail of RD400's? https://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/Yamaha-R...m=323356962812&_trksid=p2047675.c100005.m1851
Not the same one, the o/ps interest was on a red and white one. Ebay have changed how they work now so when something is sold, when you click on the link to see it, it automatically takes you to ...this bike/care/item is sold but here is something similar for sale I thought so too?? https://www.historics.co.uk/buying/...otorcycle/ref-227-1979-yamaha-rd400f-daytona/ Quite a few in here have rd knowledge so hopefully a few more will chime in
this was on the RDLC Crazy Forum last week : not a 400e, but looks a sweet stroker "Reluctantly putting up my w reg uk rd350lc for sale £5500 no offers. Massive list Mick abbey tuned everything except for the crank has been replaced. its either been powder coated, chromed or polished. Had for approx. 7 years built from the ground up 4 years ago and only used to go to the local bike café. Approx 1000 miles in that time. Metmachex swinging arm, v force reeds mick abbey tuned approx. 60bhp all set up correctly. TSA pipes, wavey discs, cannot load pics but my email address is [email protected]. for pics Just had fresh mot. it is a 250lc with conversion." can't vouch for it, but it seems pretty reasonably priced
