I'm in the process of starting a new project. I'm moving on a little technology wise and an going to be putting my 97 Carbie M900 up for sale really soon, after I've put a few of the standard parts back on it. The lovely 1000DS engine in the 1000SSie/SL project I did recently really highlighted to me how less sophisticated the 900 Carburated engine is, so I've purchased a 2003 Monster 1000 with the same 1000ie DS engine as the 1000SS, but it's a really basic model with non adjustable everything, steel swingarm etc etc. The bike I've brought also needs a little work, but as you can imagine I'm looking forward to that, and upgrading the suspension etc whilst making it look exactly like my old M900. Anyway, one of the things I'm taking off the M900 is this lovely 2K miles Hyperpro Shock: Being for a hoop suspension Monster it's 330mm eye to eye, so no good for the M1000, which needs to be the more standard Ducati 305mm eye to eye. At £430 retail new it's still worth quite a bit with only @2K miles on it, and what I'd ideally like to do is finance a similar shock for the M1000 by swapping or selling this one. So, what's compatible? There appear to be a few 749/999 Ohlins shocks about, which are 305mm length, but can I use them in the M1000? Or should I be looking for something else? Any thoughts would be appreciated. Thanks Nasher
If you look up for example Nitron rear shocks, and find out the model that fits a 749/999 and its part number. Then look up which Nitron fits your M1000 and its part number. If they are a match, try it with a couple of other brands. Then you will know if all shocks that fit 749's are suitable for M1000's.
That's a good call I did try to call them in Holland, but got an answer phone, and the message I sent via email hasn't been replied to since I sent it on Friday, so I'm assuming that like most companies they don't bother to reply to anything and you have to keep trying them. I called a couple of UK distributors, but they just told me I'd have to contact Hyperpro direct. It would be a shame to move it on if it can be changed, but the 25mm will have to come out of the main body, not the ends. Nasher.
Yep, I need to put a bit more effort in, there are loads of Ducati models listed as using a 305mm shock, but was hoping somebody would already know for example if a particular remote reservoir would foul something, the sort of thing you only find when fitting it I didn't try Nitron, thanks for that. Hyperpro have come back to me this morning and said that the cost of making all the changes required would not make it financially viable. So it looks like I need to put it up for sale when I get it out. Nasher.
on my s2r1000 which is basically same frame & suspension link etc only different swing arm ST4S ohlins shock fits and can be had cheap 200 quid-ish. but you need to workout how to mount the remote compression. canister . usually best method is to get a longer hose fitted. also st4s spring and valving is a bit wrong for an m1000 unless you are fat like me. but if you get one cheap and send it for full service all these things can be changed to suit. even if the steel shock body is corroded and scabby, they come up almost like new. 999 shock fits the s2r1000 but you need to move the coil & bracket somewhere else. not sure if there is anything in the way under there on the m1000
Asking for a friend ;-) - did you decide to sell the HyperPro. My M900sie has a tired Sachs on the back that I'm looking to replace at some point. Looking at various options from YSS, Maxton, etc. to having it overhauled by Brooks.
