1200 Rear Shock Removal 1200s Abs

  1. Hello Folks, I read AndyW's post regarding the ÖHLINS spring replacement & have ordered a 100Nm spring. Seems to me only the side panel & rear mudguard need to be removed to get at the shock mounting bolts leaving the wheel & exhaust in place. Just one question though; how is it possible to remove the rear shock with the reservoir still attached? I couldn't see an easy way to thread the reservoir through the frame. Bike is a 1200S ABS 2010 model.

  2. Take both side plastics off. Remove the left side pillion footrest bracket too (may not be necessary, but it's only 2 bolts )
    Disconnect battery.
Unplug both connectors for compression & rebound motors (take a picture so you know which goes where).
Remove bracket holding preload motor to rear of riders seat space, then disconnect it's plug.

On my bikes it was necessary to separate the rear subframe in order to get the pre load hydraulic hose out.

I wrapped the shock in a towel just to ensure it didn't get damaged.
I cant recall if you need to remove the silencer to get to the lower bolt or not. I do recall it was okay undoing it but a pig to get back in.
    Undo the top mount bolt.
Undo the 3 bolts that hold the cover over the brake hoses.
Slacken the 4 bolts that hold the metal subframe in place. From memory I think I removed all the bolts while holding it and lifted it up and to the right, being careful not to damage the wiring or hoses. There may have been a bit of fiddling with the loom to get the hose out from underneath it prior to this. You should be able to figure that out when you get to that stage.

Hope that helps you some of the way ;)

  3. Thanks John, did the job last weekend and had the 100Nm rear spring fitted - only fiddly bit was the hose from the canister to the shock. Once the 4 rear sub-frame bolts are out then dismantling and reassembly is quite straight forward - definitely helps with2 pair of hands though. Didn't need to remove the rear silencer; it's possible to access the bottom allen bolt (8mm hex) with a long allen socket
