I seem to have got myself into a bit of a mess having replaced sprocket, carrier and hub with AEM. I have re-used the conical type spacer and thin washer. Visually, the rear wheel seems to be extended outwards from the drive sprocket by about 3mm. I see a few "laser" chain alignment tools on eBay for 30 quid, but want to know if there is a more precise tool for checking this. Many thanks, Paul.
Why not take off your new carrier and measure the assembly on a bench and compare to the original set up?
Bec Because I think it too might have been out of alignment..... lots of little pieces of tinsel along the swing arm.
My Monster which is a bit of a 'bitsa' always had uneven sprocket/chain wear due to the front and rear sprockets not being quite in line (frame, engine, swingarm all of different provenance?). It was always difficult to get an accurate measurement of how far out it was and then I bought a laser alignment tool which gave me a much more meaningful and repeatable way of checking - turns out the sprockets were around 5mm out of alignment when all assembled normally. Getting them inline was a tad more complex as there isn't enough 'adjustment' at either end but I could just do it with a combination of shimming the swingarm/engine and both sprockets in opposing directions. But it wasn't until I used the laser that I was able to really get to the bottom of it as such, gets my vote.
