Rear Wheel Axle (shims, Washers)

  1. Can anyone advise. I have a 1995 supersport 900, with brake caliper on top of the brake disk not hanging below.
When pushing the rear axle through the swing arm from the sprocket side, through the rear wheel and on to the brake calliper side i.e. left to right, is there supposed to be any shims or washers on the brake calliper holder side, where the caliper holder butts up against the wheel bearing or against the right side swingarm. I can see the calliper holder seems to have a bit of a spacer built in as part of the calliper bracket itself but Im wondering whether there should be anything else. I know the caliper holder that has a hanging caliper ie at the bottom of the disk has various spacers but I can see anything for my model.
    Thanks in advance.

  2. Bike model and year? Maybe a photo of the spacer area is a good idea?

  4. In addition to Roadtrip's post, the following IPC images were downloaded from the Stein Dinse site and show the rear calliper mounting for both a Superlight and a 900SS. SS.jpeg Superlight.jpeg
The Superlight has the floating calliper which has a central bush (39) and two top hat spacers (38, 40) that allow the calliper mount to move relative to the axle when everything is tightened up and the swing arm moves.

For the SS, as the fixed calliper doesn't move relative to the axle when assembled, presume that's why no additional spacer(s) are listed in the IPC.

Would suggest when assembling just make sure that the spacers on the chain side (one is conical) are assembled so they contact the inner race of the wheel bearings, as does the the integral spacer on the calliper mount you mention in your post. I think there have been cases where the conical spacer on the chain side has been installed the wrong way round which doesn't end well.

  5. I have the superlight version on mine, and can confirm that there are no shims or washers outside of the spacers 38,40 listed by Mr Bimble.
