Rear wheel spindle sizes

  1. Hi
I've acquired an aluminium swing arm to replace the steel one on the SS, but the spindles are different.
The current spindle has 10mm hex ends, where as the ally swing arm uses the one with two nuts on the ends
The question is I've got my eye on a monster spindle that looks as if it has the right end fittings, but I'm not sure if there are different diameters of spindles.

    Can anyone please enlighten me?

  2. I thought all carbed SS rear axles were 17mm, with there being a difference between the ally swingarm axle (nuts at each end) and the steel swingarm axle, basically a very long bolt and with nut at one end. I have one of each here....not really interchangeable.

And I think there are at least two types of ally swingarm which have different adjusters.

    AL.

  3. Hi Al
The swing arm I think is off a 94 vintage SS with the screw in adjusters recessed in by the axle hole
So would the one off a moster fit?

  4. I don't know about the length of the axle, but this link for the threading might help you.....TPO Titanium Rear Axle Nuts Pair Ducati Monster SS 800 | eBay

However, my gut feeling is that it may not fit lengthwise.......But if you want to compare it with the ally swingarm axle, I can take some measurements for you.

PS....Didn't the axle come with it, then?

    AL.

  5. No Imola is using it as part of his 851 special

  6. OK.......Here's the situation.....

As we know, the 750 / 600 SS steel swingarm axles are different to the 900 SS ally swingarm axles.

However, they are all / both 17mm diameter and the threaded ends and nuts appear to be the same sizes (the nuts are M16 and have a flange 25mm dia).

Both ends of the ally swingarm axles have threads and nuts.....

One end of the steel swingarm axle has a thread and nut........the other end has a thin 'head' 36mm diameter which takes an allen key....it is the thin-ness of this head which makes the axle longer than the ally swingarm axle.

If the steel swingarm axle is to be used in the ally swingarm (assuming the ally swingarm has the adjuster blocks which have a 25mm recess for the nut flange to sit in) it can be done in two ways.....(or three, sort of)

    1) Make a spacer 25mm O/D x 17+mm I/D x 18mm long approx; and slide it to the head end of the axle (the 36mm head could be turned down to 25mm to match the spacer); and fit the nut at the other end conventionally as per the steel swingarm set-up, but without the steel washer under the nut.

    2) Or, cut the spacer in half and have one at each end instead of the above.

    3) However, I reckon this is the best solution.....First make sure that you have two nuts the same. Then cut off the excess axle at the head end......there is enough to remove the head and nearly all the allen socket, so the axle virtually has the same diameter hole all the way through.......Then thread the cut end M16 x 1.5.......And there you have it....an ally swingarm axle.

The exact length of the ally swingarm axle is 315mm......The thread length each end is slightly longer than that of the steel swingarm axle....looks like 18mm of M16 thread, tapering back to axle dia in another 2-3mm.

    Hope it helps.

    AL.

  7. Hi Al
Thanks for looking in to this. The plan is to use a spindle from a monster with the ally swing arm which should fit my rear wheel. Next thing is to sort the screw chain adjusters!

  8. If you can't find any, you could of course get some made....should be fairly simple if someone (Cough!) sorts out the dimensions for you.....

    AL.

  9. Nasty cough you've got there Al

  10. OK...could you get them made if I measured / drew them?

    AL.

  11. 900 monster/888 spindles are longer than a 900ss ally Swingarm spindle if it's of help.
But a couple of spacers will work, seen the nuts and fat washers/spacers on ebay a while ago.

  12. Look horrible though, I'll bet......

The OP's problem is going to be sourcing the adjuster blocks, I reckon.

  13. He's got them Al just needs spindle, i dont know the length of the 888 900 monster spindle measurement but it's approx 8 mm longer then a ss, will measure mine in the morning.

  14. Al, let me know the dimensions. I'll see what I can do.

  15. The particular SS ally swingarm spindle should be 315mm long, threaded both ends....it also appears the thread length is fairly crucial..............I say particular, because aren't there two types of SS ally swingarms?

  16. Ta, but it seems he has the adjuster blocks.

  17. Thanks for the input guys. As Imola says I have the blocks, just need the correct spindle. I've just bought this item 290508835557 off flea bay which I hoping is going to fit. The "other" ally swingarm is the one fitted to the ie versons and now are as rare as hens teeth to find these days.

  18. Well it looks like the right thing.......

  19. I was talking about making a spindle/axle to the dimensions needed.

Hopefully, the new one will do.

  20. Ah well......a few posts up indicated the dimensions....
