Refitting 748 fuel pump assembly

Discussion in 'Technical Help' started by Android853sp, Jan 7, 2014.

  1. Okay, so the petrol tank is all cleaned and painted and I'm ready to refit the fuel pump. The Haynes has served until now but it falls short of explaining how much and where you grease the new green o ring. Advice from the collective would be greatly apprecited. Thanks, Andy

  2. Nightmare job! :eek:

    I rub grease around the tank rolled edges, then slowly, slowly, turn the screws down.
    Usually need longer spare ones to start the job.
    I also use the round/ball end of a T alllen key to push at the green O ring as it goes in.

    Bastard mofo of task!

    Good luck!

  3. ^what Nelson says. But I found it a simple task. Straightforward.

  4. You rule...:upyeah::biggrin:

  5. Well it was certainly easier than constantly running out of petrol on the M25.

  6. I can do one fairly easily/quickly now....Fecked a few up on the curve...:frown:
    Have you checked the price of the 848-1198 O ring? :eek:

  7. Not needed to yet. Fingers crossed. Spill the beans.

  9. What? Like...loads?

  10. I put the tank on an old quilt grease the o ring then place the pump in position and push down with the heals of my hands in a circular motion, always works for me. New o rings cost me 85 p each.

  11. Thanks guys, bit the bullet and just followed what I thought would be common sense. Now I only have to wait until I rebuild the rest of the rolling chassis to put petrol in the tank and see if it leaks. Andy

  12. Could always put some in then just hold it up and look underneath, if it's leaking you'll see straight away. Also don't throw the old ring away, if you stick it away 'til next filter change you should find that it has shrunk back to original size. Can't explain why but I've done this several times now with no problems, don't think it's anything to do with being in contact with fuel as I found the same thing happened with the water jacket rings when I rebuilt Yam TZ engines back in the'80's which gave me the idea to try it on the Dukes.
