I am trying to fit a sat nav mount and have the tool to turn the top nut (to replace it) but can see it has a bezel on the bottom which is wider than the nut, so presume the top triple clamp has to come off to get to it. I've undone the three bolts that hold it to the fork legs and top nut, and the one that connects the steering damper to the frame. Do i just lift it off now, with brute force? Can't do it currently so wondering if there is something i have missed? Thanks.
I trust you were very gentle with the mallet and made sure it came off "square" so that it didn't dig in to the forks or steering stem nut. If you are planning to remove the steering stem nut, make sure that it is correctly torqued when you reinstall it otherwise you may affect the steering.
I did yes, a tap each side at a time. Is that true regarding the nut, it was damn tight to undo and i have done it up as tight as possible? I figured it is held in place by its own thread and then the triple clamp over the top, so it can't go anywhere.
The steering stem nut (the big one in the middle of the top yoke with lots of holes in it) should not be "damn tight" however it depends on your definition of "tight".... I believe it is 30Nm on a 1098R (which is the same I reckon as an 1198). This is to ensure that the bearings are not too tight in their races. If they are overtightened they can cause indentations in the races which will result in notchy steering.
