What's the best way to restore an old 'yellowed' pitted piece of carbon. Thinking of using wet n dry, white spirit and some clear lacquer. Can you rub down too much and damage the weave ? any lacquer work better than others ?
Tricol, the yellowing is can be caused by several things, one of them is UV degeneration, but more commonly heat. Sure, use nice clear lacquer and now they have UV stabilisers in them so the problem shouldn't revisit. The pitting is porosity, and those pits will still show through when you've lacquered it. You can eliminate them but it'll require either doing loads of coats of lacquer and rubbing them back or a resin wipe. If you're not fussed however, then yes, you've pretty much said it yourself, rub down, use brake cleaner or a decent paint solvent cleaner rather than WS, and yes laquer over the top All you'll do if you go too mental is cut through the resin and hit the weave bit no, you'll be ok unless you use a grinding disc to rub it down
