Risers (1 Inch /25mm) On Monster 620

  1. Hi.....my first query as a newbie! Have searched threads but no luck with this one...

Picked up my 2004 M620 ie Dark from seller in Athens yesterday and had a long (200 m+) ride south to my home. Backside killed me after 120 miles but can live with that but felt bars just a bit too far forward for me being shortish rider. Am thinking about some 1 inch riser blocks off e bay but have a query...is it going to help and there sufficient cable slack to go up an inch without lengthening cables etc??

    Many thanks in advance.....

  2. My first M900 (which I think will suffice as a comparison) had bar risers of approximately that height, with no modified brake, clutch or electric cables lengthened. You are right to be concerned as early Monster was quite congested behind headlight compared to SS of similar years with all runs closely bunched/only just enough room. Throttle cable runs in particular needed carefully routing to avoid cable stiffness/sticking particularly on lock. It's frowned upon* but I tend to remove "return" cable if this is persistent - more likely in winter. The butterfly return springs are quite strong plus you would have to have constant "presence of mind" to remember to shut throttle "manually" if they failed (which is it's only purpose).

*if in any doubt from a safety point of view - don't do it.

  3. Many thanks for the swift response Chris! Good advice....It was a surprise to me that the 620 hasn't the best of a turning lock...if raising exacerbated this then I wouldn't go ahead.....it feels as if there is scope for raising a little as you say....did you notice any personal benefit though Chris?

  4. Without a doubt it was an improvement, for me it was back related. Lovely bike in your Avatar!

Good to hear Chris....I anticipate an improvement too! Yes , its a lovely Desmo single which is nurtured periodically by my long time college pal in Northampton who looks after customers bikes and stores them....sometimes for a very long term in secure premises. Many old and new Ducatis, Benellis, MVs etc incl those owned by P Smart and Alan Cathcart etc He is a Ducati Engineer who also produces a bespoke Ducati SuperMono single with parts provided by the factory etc ....he just wishes he had more time to ride the bikes!

  6. Lovely, what a special bonus to that friendship. :upyeah:

  7. Sure is Chris....we went to the old 'Vic Camp Racing School' together back in the early 70's.....quiet an experience! We both did very well on the Ducati 350 Mk 3 ? singles shod with TT100s....riding on rails on the grippy surface was a revelation! Wore my Lewis Leather boots toes out !......but it was my friend who was invited back for an end of term race-off.....he did well.....worked for Mick Hemmings Triumph and went on to race for Andy Barrs in Corby on a Suzi GS 1000 in that Avon Roadrunner series way back then his own Seeley Norton. Spannered for many well known racers and did a lot in the USA....worked for Yamaha developing race kit and progressed to building Ducatis on his own account.....quiet a struggle! He is also designing an engine of his own and parts for the Scrambler....he's a hell of a creative type. Lucky to have him as a friend.
