It would be interesting to see the figures calculated using deaths caused relative to usage. As commercial vans & HGVs are in operation far more hours than motorcycles, these comparisons don't give clear results. Similarly the pedestrians being killed, are they run over crossing the road, kids outside schools running out, joggers at night or hit by vehicles whilst on the pavements.
What is a bit of an eye opener is the 77 (out of 336) motorcyclists deaths that involved no other vehicle. I do have a suspicion, although probably a very low number, of those involving no other vehicle, some would have been caused by the rider having to take avoiding action which as an IAM Roadsmart Observer, I am seeing more and more of.
