Q. Why did Nadine Dorries buy her daughter a car on eBay. A. She was originally searching for another 15 minutes of fame...
When someone has become notorious for their offences, what are the implications of this for the books they have written, films they have directed, pictures they have painted? Should we shun the paintings of Caravaggio because he was a violent, aggressive killer, or the pictures by Adolf Hitler? Should we refuse to watch the films of Roman Polanski? Should libraries be purged of books written by convicted murderers? The underlying question is whether works of art, regardless of their intrinsic merits (if any), are somehow tainted by the crimes of their creators? @Exige seems to imply that they are - or have I misunderstood post #1?
A work of art will remain just that, a work of art, be it a painting, sculpture or a written work of brilliance, but woe to the creator if anything is done to upset the eye of the beholder wherein the said work of art will become almost valueless because the laws of supply and demand will take effect.
It will always have a value - but that price for a non limited print even if he still had his halo is ridiculous. If it had been a fiver I wouldn't have commented. Also some crimes seem worse than others (even if they are not worse than Hitler's for humanities sake) and time has a great factor too. I would question people buying this print for that money at this moment in time most definitely and obviously thought it worth pointing out for discussion
I know someone who had 3 original pictures, bought as part of a future pension plan, they all went on the fire back after his conviction !
I find that hard to believe. I own a limited edition Rolf Harris print in the style of Monet's WaterLillies It cost me £800 and 2 years ago was insured for £2500. Value now ? Virtually nil but in 15 or 20 years? Probably more than I paid for it. Originals were into the tens of thousands of pounds. If it's been bought as an investment keep it until the time is right to sell, if ( as I did ) you bought it because you like it the conviction of the artist doesn't change the painting, burning £30000 worth of art proves nothing apart from having more money than sense.
The guy took the opinion that the pictures will never retain any value ever again, other than to collectors of a pedophile artist. I think they had a value of around 5k each, so disposed of them in the way he saw fit. good look trying to sell yours in a few years time, do you have them on display ?
yes, it's up in my living room. Even if I'd only bought it as an investment I wouldn't be so stupid as to burn it. Keeping it doesn't make me a paedophile or suggest I condone the acts of a child molester, it just means I bought it because I liked it.
