hi guys bought the missus a Honda GROM and its got quite a few bolts with the usual white corrosion, cleans up spot on with the wire wheel however im wondering if anyone knows of anything to protect them afterwards without having to paint them, like something I can brush on or wipe on, at the moment ive just used grease then wiped it off so hoping they have a light coating but want something abit more solid if anyone knows if anything!
Not the answer you probably want, but probably best to keep the Grom indoors or in a stable temperature or replace fixings with stainless steel. You could replace screws with a better level of plating for originality of course if you wanted to go to the trouble.
i don't know if the formula for ACF50 has changed over the years as has had mixed results, not just for me, but this is possibly the best compromise/approach. Adequate coverage is important, and if bike not used on roads, winter particularly, then works quite well.
I have a grom also mate and tbh, the quality of the nuts n bolts is a cheap as it comes, i coat mine in acf50 and it gets rinsed after every ride in the winter but still rusted. I’ll be changing all mine to stainless as it’s a daily all year round.
Cheers for replies guys, I spent the afternoon removing various bolts and cleaning them up then smearing grease on them and wiping them over, she’ll only be riding it on dry days and like all my bikes now it’s in my ownership I’ll mint it up and keep on top of it, probably end up replacing half the bolts but did get the bike cheap from a Honda dealer as they said it was too rusty for them to sell, it’s only 2 years old with 2k miles but previous owner must have used it right through winters and it had literally never been washed since day 1, took me nearly an hour just to get the old chain grease off the back wheel as previous owner was one of those who put grease on old grease on the chain lol Will be a good first bike for Mrs until she’s done her direct access eventually and then I’ll probably end up keeping it as spare play bike, it’s actually quite fun to ride and I’ve ordered her a twin underseat exhaust, tail tidy and short indicators, got some bits off for powder coating black and hopefully she’ll be happy with it
Best you can do is clean with a brass brush and wipe with an oily rag. Medium term alternative would be to get all the bolts plated but thats probably around £100
Replace with stainless steel as you go. Most OEM fasteners are crap and that applies to all manufacturers.
