899 Sat Nav/gps Wiring

  1. Hi all, I'm looking to fit a Sat nav to my 899, a Garmin Zumo 660. (save me the "you shouldn't put that sort of thing on an 899" chat............with my sense of direction, it's needed!) ;-)

So, I'm after some advice from anybody who has fitted one to the 899 about how they went about the wiring........I'm aware you can wire direct to the battery terminals as it has an in-line fuse but this would mean it is constantly live and would be a draw on the battery when stored/parked etc. Has anybody wired it via a switched/ignition live and if so what circuit did you use? Thanks!

  2. I use an Optimate USB unit - OptiMate O-101 USB Charger

You simply unplug your wall charger and plug this unit in before every ride. Give a standard USB port on the bike. I've located my usb connection by the fuse box and ran a wire up to the top yoke.

The unit is very smart and shuts down once it senses the battery drop below a certain voltage but I've never had this happened yet.

Afraid I can't post any pics as the bike tucked away for the winter but its a very stealth design with the only give away being the blue LED which I purposely have on show so I can monitor if its draining to much voltage.

  3. I've just put mine on,... done a very neat install so I can take the cradle off via a waterproof 2-pin connector when I'm not using it, cos I don't want to make a carthorse out of a racehorse by leaving the horrible RAM arms on when its not in use :Vomit:

I've just wired mine straight to the battery, never been a problem on my past KTM over the last 3 years, it will only drain the battery when the sat nav switched on and is in the cradle and the engine is off so how often is that??

    You'll be sound :upyeah:

  5. I havent got a 660 but have a 550 . I have it wired into an electrical feed that comes on with the ignition. When the ignition goes off it asks if I want to keep it on or it automatically switches off after 30 seconds. So there is no draw on the battery whilst the ignition is switched off. I wired it myself but can't remember how . I will of followed instructions though as I know FA about electrics .
