I ve got some shiny new bolts for my calipers. The trouble is, I m having a spot of bother getting the old ones out.I ve managed to loosen three bolts off with an impact drive but the other five seem to have rounded holes!Anyone got a sly way of getting them out?Just to make it clear, its the bolts that hold the two halves together.
This is a pic of just such a bolt albeit from the rear caliper. note the corrosion that effectively locks the bolt in place, seems water gets drawn in.
weld a nut to bolt head if possible heat should penetrate and nut should give a purchase to wind out or por some coca-cola around bolt to get to threads have heard a mix of diesel and petrol is a good penetrating fluid
If they are allen bolts, get a Torx bit, that is just too big to go in the socket, and hammer it into the bolt. It will grip the rounded off socket and the shock will help loosen the corrosion.
HI Keith, I'm looking to do an overhaul on my front calipers as well but can't find genuine bolts. Are your new shiny ones genuine or atleast look the same and where did you get them? Seal kits I got from KTM but they don't show the bolts unless I missed something. They are a bitch to get out though. Thanks Bront
The bolts are not genuine but look okay.I cant remember the seller as it was awhile back, but off ebay.
Just done mine Keith, drilled out with 6mm bit and used an easi out, once they " cracked" they came out ok, put some copper gease on new ones, shaft included not just threads, Myk
Just come in from the shed. After staring and sulking, I got a chisel and hammer.Bunged a caliper in the vice and slowly, tap, tap, tapped the bolts around. There was a great temptation to give em a big one but I resisted.Took a little time but got there in the end.Cheers for the replies chaps.
