Scrambler 800 (2017) Gear / Gearbox Problem

Discussion in 'Technical Help' started by lauriz, Aug 4, 2022.

  1. Hi

Im new ducati owner and new to the forum.
Just bought scrambler 800 2017 that had frontall accident.

Replaced the front and now the bike is mostly ok.

Ecept i cant get it higher than second gear.

So it takes neutral and one and two gears,
but cant get other gears on.

i have changed the motor oil and tried to lube the gear lever mechanism.

any quesses what could be the issue?

do you think the gearlever was struck in the accident? Is the lever "floppy" to move, or just floppy on upward direction, and still sprung on downward direction/section, or visa-versa?

It could be that return spring (item 4) needs setting up with stopper plate (item 16) again

  3. Hi. Ya, it was struck in the accident. the pedal detached from the thing. the exle seem staight. i replaced the pedal and the outside mechanish. its not super floppy in any direction. it just wont take 3 or higher. the lever just stops and doent try to connect the gear. no clunk noise. 1 and 2 are ok. doest make any horrible noises. in the pic the situation before i replased those parts

  4. As it was struck in the accident I would say all of the relevant items in the exploded picture need examining for damage, and then the return spring adjustment setting checked (as said), you could even have a bent selector fork (11/12).

Also looking at last picture, are you happy that splined gear lever is in the same place as before and also short linkage adjusted correctly? as these could be relevant.

  6. That is a good start, even one spline out will make a noticeable difference, but I get a feeling it could be deeper than this as you can already get two gears without difficulty?

  7. In the image of your bike it looks like the locknut on the actuator arm is hitting the sidestand bracket, but that could just be the angle the image was taken from.

  8. Silly question but have you rode the bike and found you can’t get 3rd gear onwards or have you tried it stationary without the engine running?

  9. Hi. I did drive the bike. it performs quite the same when driving and stationary without running the engine. when trying to change from 2 to 3 it doenst feel that its connecting gear and its not making any clank sound like when i put it to 1 or 2 gear.

  10. And the clutch is correctly adjusted for 1st and second gear - so not dragging to make changing more difficult?

  11. i did try to adjust the clutch, but it seem ok for me. bike is ok to drive using gear 1 or 2.

i did try to move the gear lever system a bit, but doesnt seem to help. now it had little unhealthy sound when i tried to engage gears. also might be that havent used the bike in a year, but oil light also is sometimes on when i start driving and its putting hazard lights on also. that went away when i gave it bit revs.

here video link in the end that bit worrying sound.
couldt post direcly here so its files site https://files.fm/f/wud8u7sym
atleast in cars im used that that kind of sould is when the gear isnt suncronised or clutch ist all the way

  12. Ooh that doesn’t sound right! My guess is something is bent in the gear box

  13. I got the lid of. needed to buy removal tool. there is some marks at the last picture. how normal are those? what should i inspect / dismantle next?

  14. There is that one spring. possibility that that axle/rod is bit bend. almost impossible to put the cover back on now when i removed it. when i put that axle to the right hole the the cover is 1-2mm lower than it should

  15. The rurn spring should be touching the control fork, so as you said the fork may be bent.

  16. Here couple pictures. Bike is at neutral. First pic is the situation now at neutral. i marked the upper pin and the case. second pic is first gear. third pic is first gear keeping the lever down, final pic is second gear keeping the lever there. second didnt click to its place so i hold it there for the picture.

  17. Can you select any gears higher than 2nd if you physically pull the selector arm towards you or away from you whilst moving the gear lever?

Also, the spring looks very odd to me.
I'm sure the bent over section should be bearing down on the top of the arm, not sat on top of it with a gap.
There even appears to be a witness mark where it rubbed on the side.
Could the other end of the spring be broken

It should sit more like this:
