996 Service On Time

  1. Morning campers

12k miles is looming far quicker than I was anticipating/budgeting for due to having a lovely time.

How important is it to get it done smack on 12k? Could it be dragged out to 12500mls?

Geoff@Baines said it sounded "tight" a few hundred back. Belts 2yrs old in September.

My service history before the belts is non existent.

    Peace.

  2. Depends on how much you rag it... loads of track days or hooligan riding they I'd service it on time or early, but normal riding you should be ok to stretch the service intervals a bit... 500 - 1000 no worries....

  3. important bits are belts and shims; belts most important in my humble oponion

  4. :Wideyed:

  5. As above, don't go mad on it and it should be fine for an extra 500 miles. If you have been riding it hard then I'd be more wary.

If you can do some of the service jobs yourself you could start when it hits 12,000 miles and then leave the belts and valve shims until a little later when you hit 12,500 say.

  6. Cheers guys.

Already done brake/clutch fluid change with oil/filter. Can do air filter I guess.

Want Geoff to do plugs, belts , shims, etc.

  7. give it another 5k of ragging it first

  8. Plugs are easy to do yourself and quite easy to get to on the 966 (unlike 848 horizontal plug which can be a bitch to get to... Why they didn't make the radiator 5mm shorter or higher I'll never know... )

  9. If you can change and bleed brakes and clutch fluids, I'm sure you can change your own belts too...
It's not rocket science, it just takes patience and a methodical approach.

  10. I'm considering changing the next-next set of belts, 2017(ish). But as I have hardly any service history and this is the 12k service I want Geoff in there looking at the shims, rockers (gulp, fingers crossed, oh please Lord, I've been ever such a good lad), so makes sense he does the belts at the same time.

Want him to take the plugs out too so he can see how its running. I'm getting some back fires in town, I think the EPROM is set for race pipes but mine are road legal.

  12. Unless I dreamt it; pretty sure there is an iPhone or Android app for setting the tension of the belts. Works like a guitar tuner... Wish I'd thought of that... Bugger...

  13. Gates carbon drive is the iPhone app

  14. If you mean you wish you'd thought of making an app for measuring the tension of Ducati cam belts, there is still plenty of room for that as all the ones currently available are really intended for something else, even the gates carbon app, which is actually intended for bicycle drive-belts.
