Shoei X-spirit 3; X14

  1. As per the title I've a xspirit3 and love it with the exception of the amount of air that passes over the visor and then over my eyes.
The really strange thing though is if I OPEN the wide vent just below the visor that seems to reduce the amount of air flow drastically.
Anybody find the same or have a fix for it?

  2. It’s the mesh chin guard, ....I found it was letting too much air up past your face and making my eyes water ( it was only about 8c the other week mind ) next time you’re out on the bike just put the back of your hand horizontally up under the chin piece, this cuts the draft down, I’ll bet that’s what you’re feeling?

I’ve lined mine with a piece of gore windstopper fabric, no more drafts eyes

Have to say I’m not blown away by this helmet, all the vent catches are far too small, cannot feel them with gloves on, and the visor catch is a pita, keep pushing the lock catch up when I open the visor and then can’t shut it until I push the visor lock catch down again

Beginning to wish I’d bought a HJC RAPHA 11 now ??

  3. Poucher, I tried loads on before buying and it felt the best fit and its so light.
It also feels so stable compared to my old xr1100, so they got some things right.
The vent clip aren't the best design as you say but I seem to manage eventually, Saturday was the 1st time. Had difficulty with the visor.
I'll give it a go with the chin cover and hopefully it's a simple mode, however for the price you shouldn't have to do anything

  4. Don`t.
I have one, it must be one of the worse helmet I`ve ever owned.
90-100 mph I get horizontal buffeting and it`s very noisy, even with earplugs.
The only "good things," I really like the Kylo Ren graphics and I got it for just over half the RRP (£265, they were priced at about £500!!!) If I had paid the full price I would have been well pissed off.

  5. Where does the new Shoei X14 in your title come into the discussion ? Andy

  6. Andy,
X-14 is what it's called in the US.
    Regards
    Andy

  7. My understanding is that the X14 is an entirely new helmet designed to meet 2019 MotoGP regs and according to my local UK stockist, is only available (and legal) in the US so different to the X-Spirit III available in the UK. I’ll have a dig around see what I can find. Andy

  8. That’s odd, because I had the HJC RAPHA 10 before the X-Spirit and I thought it was a pretty good lid ??

No complaints about the Shoei once it’s on your head and setup how you like it and when riding it does feel very “slippery “ through the air, but I still think the HJC’s vents and visor locks are far easier to operate, really like the centre catch for the visor, dead easy to find and doesn’t twist the visor when you’re pushing it open.

Main thing that made me go back to a Shoei was it got the top score on testing for the sharp impact testing

Moral of this story.....take yer fekkin gloves with you when you’re trying a new lid on !!

  9. So Shoei advised to go to my retailer but I bought it at the NEC. So I decided to take it to Custom Lids in Gateshead and after explaining the situation the manager immediately offered to have a look.
He put some silicon on the seal and by blowing hard at the visor lip all the way around (he'd put my clear visor on as it's easier to see) you could see positions where air was getting in.

So he adjusted to sides and got it air tight, so I just need to get out on the bike to see if that's cured it.

Top marks to Custom Lids as Shoei did say other retailers would be reluctant to do anything in case they broke it

  10. Andy did you manage to find out the difference?

  11. So I've been out today and the issue was definitely the visor that had been passing very slightly at 1 location.
All is good and back in love with the lid

  12. Looks like I got confused. The X-Spirit III does indeed look like it's called the X14 in the States. Hoping to catch up with a mate at Feredax so will ask him about what I thought I read about the latest MotoGP helmet regs. Glad you got yours sorted. Andy

  13. Also have to say that I’m happier with mine, up in Scotland on a 4 day weekend with the boys and I seem to be finding it easier to get along with, got over my problem operating the visor catch, that’s like second nature now and my main impression of the lid is it’s quietness and stability at speed.

I do think Shoei make the best lids you can buy these days
