Shorai Li-on Battery Short Circuit.

  1. was washing the 1098 today when I smelt burning, had a quick sniff and look to find smoke coming from the the area of the battery. Ripped the side panel off as quick as I could given the ridiculous amount of varying sized Allen heads to find this image.jpg anyone else had this happen? Need a new charger extension cable I reckon.

  2. Shit a brick

  3. Nowt wrong with that. Perfectly normal.

  4. When you say "washing", were you using a pressure washer ? Can't imagine why there would be water all over the battery otherwise.

  5. Nope, just a bucket and sponge, actually I think the washing is unrelated, looking at the terminal pins in the battery it looks like they've have corroded for some reason. Seems there's been some sort of short.

  6. Think I would be having a word with the importer . If no joy there speak with the U.S manufacturer. That shouldnt happen.

  7. Quite lucky there as Li-on batteries when shorted have a tendency to burst into flames, glad you caught it quickly

  8. These batteries are Li-Fe not Li-po, or Li-Ion. So less to worry about Shorai state they will not burst into flames in the same spectacular ways as their cousins.

    I'd do what @ducati2242 suggests.

I had problems with a battery that would not balance in the past and contacted Shorai directly, they were super helpful and even though they stated that they would not support a non-US based bought battery, they did.

I shipped it back and they gave me the dosh off a bigger battery and shipped from it to me direct from the US, even though I had owned the battery for over a year, I got a brand new one in return.

I know not related to your problem but from my experience they do stand by their product.

  9. :Wideyed: Lucky you spotted that

  10. Wow, i have the same battery on mine. Not had any problems yet mind. But i dont have a charging lead connected to it as you need a special charger for those and ive only got a bog standard charger in my garage.

  11. That connector cover looks like a real water trap, and the connector itself looks a little under rated for the amps going through a bike battery as well!
May have just been corroding over time until it finally got so bad it got hot, melted the shroud and then shorted.
Luckily you caught it as it could have done a lot of damage!
