Showa Oil Gap

  1. Does anyone know the recommended Oil level 'Gap' for this style of fully adjustable Showa?

I know the older version(40mm Calliper mounts) is 108mm, but not sure about these.
I've seen everything from 94mm to 132mm quoted online.
They are the shorter length S4/ST ones, not the longer 1000SS ones.

Got a new Stanchion arriving for the one in pieces today, and would like to get them back together.

    Thanks

  2. I don't know the level but if you put one leg together without the spring and put in the higher level and see if you can compress it all the way without it getting stiff or feeling like you're pushing against a spring ( a bit like a bike pump when you put your finger over the hole ) then you will be in the right range. As long as the piston is covered by oil when it's fully extended and you can compress it as described it's in the working range.

  3. 94mm according to the ST workshop manual. The air space above the oil is important because it acts as a pneumatic spring. The smaller the air space, the harder the fork action.

  4. Thanks Derek.

I'll go with that I think, although I'll be using them in a M1000, so might need to add a bit more once the bike is up and running and I've tested it.
