748 Side Stand Help

Discussion in '748 / 916 / 996 / 998' started by Fraser Large, Feb 26, 2022.

  1. Some newbie help please. i have just got my hands on a 748 2000 model. The side stand wont stay down and it does lean over an awful lot. Can you get a longer stand as there seems to be two sizes and i assume it just needs a new sping to get it to stay down. any help would be appreciated as now i have it i think i will need to be a frequent visitor

  2. Welcome!
Sounds like it’s just as Ducati intended :)

  3. I did read that a 848 stand is compatible and a little longer, has anyone tried that ?

  4. Is that why italians are short to pick it up off the floor easier ;-)

  5. The 748 of that era was fitted with a suicide stand, as soon as you stand the bike up, it springs back into its park position. Simplest fix is to fit a side stand assembly from an 848/1098. It is designed to stay down until you kick it up and as has been said, is a bit longer which reduces the lean angle. Andy

  6. as said, 848/1098/1198 stand and forged mount are a straight swap.
    Reason for leaning can be:-
Worn or loose pivot or aluminium stand - easy to check visually as the stand "loads up" while you lean the bike to park it.
Loose or damaged forged brkt fixings - this is fairly common and if only loose then it's a satisfying fix.
Rear suspension has been raised considerably, this will make even a brand new, no-wear present, 748 lean over further than ideal.

It could be one of these or a combination of any of these.

You can get an aftermarket attachment plate to overcome the manufacturer's intended "suicide" action sidestand set-up.

  7. If you get a stand that stays down seriously consider fitting the neutral safety switch circuit to ensure you can't ride off with the stand down. It will also enable you to start the bike on the stand in neutral

  8. I put the 1198 stand on my 996 big improvement

  9. I have fitted 848/1098/1198 stands on both my 916 and 998. Night and day! The stand only is plug and play. No need to get the entire assembly if you only mean to reduce the lean angle.

  10. That is quite true, but the Sidestand rarely comes up for sale on its own, plus it’s good to reduce the chances of wear on the forging and pivot by buying the whole thing. If we’re looking at all options, a modified Cagiva Mito stand will do it, as it’s slightly longer plus you can buy a foot extension to clamp/bolt on to your original 748 stand.

  11. Of course, the stand on its own means the rest of the assembly is in good shape! :upyeah:

I was able to find mine on their own on eBay. There’s one for sale right now on page one of a simple search.

    Very pricey, though…

  12. I had to change the stand and fixing bolt on mine
