Silencer Temps Differ ?

  1. Just been able to ride my 900ss carby properly for the first time since an engine swap (ie roads dry and air temp 12+ degrees), rode it last week in very low temp and damp conditions and whenever I snatched the throttle open it stutterd and held back, we put this down to carb icing but it did the same again today, the fuel had been in the bike for about 3 months with the bike not being run, anyway continued to ride for about 20 miles and it seemed to improve, then filled up with new fuel and rode another 20 miles and it’s running much better, so my guess is maybe the carbs were gummed or there was water in the fuel previously, anyway pulled up in a lay-by and generally had a look around the bike, noticed that the left hand silencer was much hotter than the right, a big difference, couldn’t put my hand on the left but could on the right, so I was wondering has anyone else noticed this on their bike?, it seems odd because the bike has standard down pipes which are siamesed of course, so I would have expected similar temps, a few thoughts are, a) regardless of the Siamese down pipes the gas flow favours one side, b) the baffling is subtly different from one can to the other, c) one cylinder is leaner than the other and running hotter and although the pipes siamese they still carry the majority of gas from 1 cylinder each .
I haven’t got time today to check plug colours or mixture screws but has anyone got any ideas?, cheers Mark.

  2. Crap weather so been messing around in the garage all day today, mainly cosmetic bits and bats but also had the plugs out they looked a similar colour, checked the mixture screws, the rear carbs mixture screw was 3 turns out and the front was 5.5, so I’ve set them both to 5 and fingers crossed dry roads tomorrow I’ll get out and see if there’s a difference in running & silencer temps, that said am I right in thinking that the screws only affect mixture at low revs, idle circuit?.

  3. footnote; the silencers continued to show different temps, after fitting Carbon cans they now are the same temp, so it must’ve been a difference in the original silencers, maybe the packing was less in one of them or the flow was different, anyway they are equal temps now with the new cans.
