Silicone Gasket? Yes Or No

  1. Hmmm.... I'm having trouble with minor, but irritating, oil weeps on both the lh & rh engine casings on the old Darmah. So far I've tried with only the gaskets & the gaskets with a smear of Hylomar blue or Permatex Aviation 'Form-a-Gasket' all to no avail.

I'm of the thought that this may be due to the gaskets themselves not being the best as they don't always line up exactly with the bolt holes or the casing outline which leaves a lip of gasket on the inside or outside the cover. It probably doesn't help that I'm always wary of using too much gasket cement so most probably miss a bit.

However, whilst looking at the gaskets on the Mdina Italia web site I notice they stock a Ducati branded ThreeBond silicone gasket. So has anybody used this stuff in anger and have good or bad views on it?

  2. That’s what I use for my oil screen plate. I like it and have never had an issue. I do use acetone to clean both sides first.

  3. For all modern Ducatis ThreeBond is the recommended sealant, usually without a gasket. I've been using it for quite a few years now on all sorts of engines including my 1948 BSA. It seals very well. Even the BSA hardly leaks any oil. I'd be happy to use it on Darmah casings.

  4. I think a decent RTV sealant will be fine, I've used Wynns black gasket maker a few times, was recommended by my local Ducati dealer. Also comes in a tube that has an applicator so easy to make tidy job

  5. I use ThreeBond 1215 on my bikes including the '75 Bonnie with its dodgy gaskets & surfaces. It's great stuff and easy to clean off too. I wouldn't pay the Ducati premium on 100gm of the same stuff when you can get 250gm for the same price here:

HOWEVER - 1215 has about a 1yr shelf life before it starts to separate, so check the expiration date on seller's stock before buying (Tecsil - I think they are the UK importer/distributor - didn't check the tube they sent to me!)

  6. Cheers boys... :upyeah:so when I next need to take the covers off it's deffo gonna go back together with RTV silicone.

I do like the ones that come with an applicator mind as it's got to to make it so much easier to get an accurate continuous thin bead the length of the complex shaped thin walled multiple bolt hole covers - both have 10 screw holes.
