996 Sorting Handling

  1. So, 996 was never right. When I got her Nov 2014 she turned like an ocean liner. After a very long (even for me) thread on sag/preload/etc I got her much much better and was pretty happy but never got on with the tyres and seemed to tip in at low speed.

I bought a 999 in Feb and it blew the 996 away. Trying to ride the 996 like I could the 999 was frankly dangerous and the front end nearly tucked a couple of times.

New tyres then. Went to Flitwick motorcycles on Saturday and settled on new Rosso 3 as I liked the older version on the 999. Night and day to the old tyres. Felt instantly better. Took her easy the 30mls home.

Rode 35 mls to Silverstone and had the suspension set by 100% suspension. £50 and really seems to know his stuff and very friendly. Advised to give him a call once if ridden a bit and he'll advise what needs clicking. He checks the shock and forks and says the don't need a service, although it would only be good, so that can wait till next year.

Here are the setting, as you can see I was not far out but I can definitely feel the difference.

So rode the 35mls back at increasing pace till I hit the magic 100mls.

Just before home I had a crack at my favourite place to ride, absolutely amazing difference, better than 999 now. So stable and flickable on comparison. Felt safe and fast. Left knee down twice which never happens!!

    One happy bunny!

  3. What rear shock do you have? Ohlins or Showa?

  4. All you need now is a set of carbon / magnesium wheels to finish her off.

  6. Slightly out of my price range I'm sorry to say.

  7. Its very rewarding once you get the 996 set up right. I spent a lot of time last year tweeking mine as I never felt it handled anywhere near as good as my R1. Im still not 100% happy with mine, but its not far off. I will have to compare yours settings to mine, will be interesting to see how they compare!

  8. From what the guy said, that just won't quite work. Even if the parts are the same your suspension and mine will be slightly different due to manufacturing, age, millage, usage, blah, blah, blah. He recons (although obviously he would) that each machine needs to be done on its own. I'm inclined to agree though.

  9. Get the ride hide and suspension settings done properly by someone who knows what they are doing, with newish tyres and chain. Factory settings are approximate but only work if the front end is set properly in the yolks and the back end is running right for the tyre/chain. Many find correctly set up front and back too soft and tighten them up too far or try to take out some of the "ass in the air" that this rolling chassis demands. Once it has been set up you won't regret it and realise how the bike is supposed to be driven, otherwise it will never feel quite right and you will not be able to understand what the bike is about.

  10. Hi Denzil when you say someone who knows what they are doing who do you mean exactly?
Reason I ask is this is something im interested in myself getting my bike set how I like it as well as understanding how I got to said setting and making adjustments myself. I have used Colin at 100% myself and yes he is very good but that was just to set suspension not mess with ride height and so on.
    Mark.

  11. My mates 748r has had the back raised we think and it steers super quick, for me it's putting a little too much weight on the front and makes the steering a little heavy, rather than slow. But yeah it steers fast!!!

My 848 steered like an ocean liner Also! Obv no ride height adjuster fitted as stock and once in a corner u couldn't make easy adjustment to your line, just wasn't possible. Plus it destroyed front tyres!

Again it all seems to be about getting the ride height absolutely perfect with these bikes
