Sp3 For Sale...

Discussion in '851 / 888' started by AndrewS, Jun 17, 2022.

  1. Well, it says « 851 » on the seat, as a starter…

  2. It says 851 on the seat because it is an 851.
The engines in the 851 “strada” was 851cc as well.
But the 851 SP3 was a homologation model and had a 888cc engine.

    Henk!!!

  3. As has been said, all SP3s had 851 on the set unit, but in fact had an 888cc engine.

I was thinking more of things like Termi carbon end cans (don't think they came with those?), rear-sets, blue (!) Samco hoses, carbon clocks surround, steering damper, not sure if the helmet lock is there or not... All of which may be quite desirable, but for that sort of money I'd want originality (or at least, the original parts with it).

  4. I perfectly understand the homologation principle. The 916 SPS had a 996 engine. Still, nobody called it a 996, right?

    So it’s a 851 SP3, or a 888 SP3 ?

  5. According to Ian Falloon in " THE DUCATI STORY - 6TH EDITION - Racing and production motorcycles from 1945 ":
"The 851 was slightly restyled for 1991. Even though it was still called an 851, the 888cc SP3 now had upswept mufflers, carbon fibre front mudguard and black wheels, a revised air intake system and, like the SP2, was also made in small numbers (about 500), with a numbered plaque on the top triple clamp celebrating the winning of the 1990 World Superbike Championship."
    Hope this helps.
    Tom.

  6. It's a Ducati 851 SP3 - as it says on the plaque on the top yoke. Regarding the 916 SPS, it did indeed have the 996 engine, but still said 916 on the fairings (I think?) - like the 888cc 851 SP3 says 851 on the seat unit...

  7. Pricey or is that dealer markup added.

  8. Que? It's the dealer's ad.

  9. Yes i fully understand, i thinking that was nearly SP4 / Sp5 money.

  10. As said it is called a 851SP3.
The first SP that was called a 888 was the 888SP4 followed by the 888SP5.

  11. 916 SPS had 916 fairings for sure. But I believe they had a « 996 » engine number stamped on the oil pan left side. Like the 916 SPA, which had 916 fairings with a 955cc motor and “955” in the engine number.

All I’m saying, I guess, is that the ad is incorrectly spelt when it says 888 SP3. It should state « 851 SP3 ». Most of us have read Falloon’s books and the seller should know that potential buyers will probably have done their homework (and know it has a 888 motor) before paying 2 grants for a 30 years old bike. This type of ad doesn’t really appeal to me. ;)

  12. Doh - would you believe I didn’t notice that? Senior moment! I saw SP3 and the picture, and assumed…

However I think this thread has clarified what it is. Surprised John Fallon got it wrong though.

  13. Interestingly enough, and to confuse people a little more, the top yoke plate only mentions “SP3” and sequence number. Nothing about 851/888.

Anyways, it’s a very beautiful bike that should quickly find a happy owner!

  14. As you said, the team at Made in Italy only need to say 851 SP3 and anyone who knows will appreciate that it has the 888 engine. Nice bike and certainly has a few in period additions, but would take a little bit to get it back to totally original.

  15. The SP2, 3 and 4's all sell for around the same money, the '92 SPS and SP5's command higher sums because of their higher spec motors.

  16. I don't know about the selling price of these models, but the following links may help to confirm the specification of each variant after the 851's:

    https://www.motorcyclespecs.co.za/model/ducati/ducati_888sp4.htm .

    https://www.motorcyclespecs.co.za/model/ducati/ducati_888sps.htm .

    https://www.motorcyclespecs.co.za/model/ducati/ducati_888sp5.htm .

    https://www.motorcyclespecs.co.za/model/ducati/ducati_888spo.htm .

Then of course from 1994 the 851/888 SP variants were superseded, initially by:

    Hope this helps.

  17. The 888SP0 and 888SP0 Ltd's were just 888 Strada's dressed up to look like SP5's for the American market, where they weren't allowed SP5's due to the emission laws.
They aren't real SP's, the SP standing for Sport Production as in "Proddy" racers and SPS stands for Sport production Special.
