Hi. After getting another tank because mine was damaged in an accident I now need to do something with the original. It's now had the fuel pump removed and transferred over. So now I've got a bare tank. How shall I store it? I was also going to buy another fuel pump and get it installed as a spare for the track. Could I still store it ok? Thanks Jeff
I have a spare tank , brought from ebay as an impulse 4yrs ago in case I damaged my original. It doesn't have a fuel pump either and has been kept in the box it was delivered in , its in perfect condition in and out , so I would say no probs provided its not stored anywhere damp.
don't put it on top of a filing cabinet so that it gets scratched the moment you open the up'n'over door of your garage!!
Keep it somewhere dry with a stable temperature and ventilated. Moisture condenses on metal surfaces if they are colder than the air around them or the other way round. Don't block the hole where the pump was and remove the petrol filler cap. You might also put some silicone grease on the unpainted metal surfaces. Andy
I have just put an R tank on my 999 , it was imaculate inside , my std 1 had a little rust which i sprayed with WD 40 , dont know if that will help .
If it was my spare tank, I would clean it out, as you would; wipe or spray an oil film over the inside (not WD40.........it can attract moisture after a while) chuck in some of those little bags of dessicated silicone thingy that come with various optical and electrical items (I knew I kept them for a reason) and let the filler cap drop down but not shut completely........ ....I wouldn't wipe oil over the outside as it can discolour the paint as it 'dries'.........probably best to clean it and wrap it in something that won't absorb moisture from the air with a few more of the silicone packets chucked in for good measure.
store it inside the bladder of a Nepalese Sherpa but only do so on the third Monday of the month or at full moon.
