916 Special Tools

Discussion in '748 / 916 / 996 / 998' started by tazmantic, Nov 10, 2015.

  1. So there seems to be so many special tools that are needed for working on ducs was wondering what ones people buy and what ones they make or fake? I've now got a few and made another today but am thinking I deff need more to put this engine back together one of which for sure is for the head bolts, but which is best the crows foot or just the flat plate type. Also what feeler gauge sets are best as mine are very limited in sizes...

  2. Special tool's ... There's a few on this forum :tearsofjoy: :tearsofjoy:
    I'll get my coat....

  4. A primary gear puller is strongly needed as they are very hard to remove at times although it can be done using an hydraulic puller. As above a decent head nut spanner which fits your nuts correctly (there are two sizes of nut).

A reliable method of checking belt tension that you are comfortable with, angled feeler gauges make valve clearance checking easier along with a good selection of shims, which can be quite expensive.

Finally the usual tools like clutch holder, alternator side casing puller, oil filter tool etc. An engine stand to build the motor on is helpful.

Any "special" tool tends to make life easier and I have accumulated them over the years as i have gone along. I think you will soon find any gap in your tooling as soon as you start working on the engine, combine that with a good run through of the workshop manual and you should have a good idea what you will most immediately need

  5. Thanks for the info, got a few of them and made another of the easy tools today, been looking for some feeler gauges but not found any that look OK for the job yet

  6. Laser do quite a few Ducati specific tools for reasonable money and up to DIY usage.

  7. Ok thanks I'll have a look

  8. Indeed, except that is for the plastic clutch holding tool, which is about as much use as a chocolate teapot... ;)

  9. Check out HDESA (sp?) tools on ebay. They're machined really well, and the kits contain many essential tools you'll want for working on a 748/996.
You should make a rocker pin puller (very easy, a long bolt, some washers, and a spare socket), unless you buy the 700euro kit that comes with one.

  10. I reckon that a cheapish set of feelers is as good as any really.
But for checking valve clearances, the most important thing is that you can dismantle the set and use just a single, unfettered gauge.
This dramatically increases the level of "feel" and is worth far more in real terms than a fancy set.
The other important thing is that they are new and undamaged.
For this reason, a cheap set is arguably better, as they can be frequently replaced.
I got my current set from Halfords....its actually quite comprehensive too.

And if you're measuring shims, a shim measuring button for the closers is virtually essential.
