Speedo Cable For 1996 Sl

Discussion in 'Supersport (1974-2007)' started by Mr-Superlight, Oct 10, 2018.

  1. Bit of a puzzle: The speedo cable recently broke on my 1996 Superlight. Ordered a replacement from Wemoto as I thought I'd get it quicker from them than elsewhere and they listed a suitable one. Came to fit it and discovered that it is short. Measuring the old and new ones and the new one is 720mm whilst the old is 800mm - the new one is too short when I follow the same routing.
Wemoto say that for my age of bike they believe that 720mm is correct - they have however found that the fitments for a pre-1982 900SS are the same and the length is 800mm.
Anyone able to shed light on this ? Wemoto have offered to send me one of the old ones but I just wondered why my existing cable seemed to be quite a bit longer than what they stock for my bike?

  2. nope. it's 800mm.
The forks alone are around 720 - 730, plus the distance to the instrument binnacle.
Wemoto to be fair a re more japanese bike specialists. Have you tried Stein Dinse?

  3. There is always Venhills in Dorking As a fallback but the last one I bought was for a Moto Guzzi/Ebay I believe.

  4. Thanks - Wemoto have been pretty good TBH, they're sorting me out with the replacement however they also saif they've sold a number of cables for my bike model with no apparent complaints!

  5. Would Ducati dealers not still stock these?

  7. Pretty sure they’re still available. They weren’t much from what I remember. About 15 quid. I’ll check tomorrow

  8. I retrospect sourcing from a dealer would have been sensible but I thought someone like Wemoto was the way to quickly and cheaply get the right replacement as they listed mine.

  9. Yep. They're still available for £15.58 inc. VAT

  10. Well the replacement turned up today and it fits perfectly. It was packaged as a Venhill item for 70-94. The original, too short one, was branded as 'Slinky'. Strange.
    All sorted now anyway.

  11. Somewhere in my box of old tools, I have a worn speedo cable staking tool - it has several positions for various size cables and it's purpose is to form the square end on the inner cable and cut the cable to the correct length.

It used to be done by putting the tool in a vice and hammering it a couple of times.

Before it got too worn, whenever I needed a new inner cable (that's the bit that normally breaks) for either a bike or a car,
I used to go to the local junkyard and blag a cable off something like a Ford Cortina, or even a Mini.

Easy enough to renew the inner cable using the tool; but now it is basically shot; so on a spare pair of big vice jaws, I machined both 4mm and 3mm V grooves in opposite positions - they are also in my box of old tools somewhere.

When they are fitted to the vice, in goes the end of the cable and I wind up the vice using a 1" diameter by two foot long thick wall pipe on the handle - it works pretty well.

Thankfully I haven't had to do one for ages, though.
