Has anyone replaced just the spring on the starter sprag bearing? The bike in this case is a 749. I`ve scoured the web and found the spring from an SKF cr19778 oil seal is a suitable replacement but, I`ve also read conflicting reports that it`s a fraction to wide and jams in the cams. I know I could just strip it down and find out myself but I like to do the research first. I`ve scanned a couple of pages from an old PS magazine (they`re doing a 900SS), might be of some help.
I've repaired the sprag on my 996 with a spring off ebay. later found out that the spring is supposedly the same as from a 50mm fork seal. Anyway worked a treat and two years later all is still good, the old spring was well knackered when compared to the replacement.
I got all my parts from here when the sprag went on my 749 - Star Twin: the online shop for Ducati OEM spare parts and accessories.
Repairing the sprag clutch is not a five minute job and if your bike has done a few miles and the sprag has been playing up it is almost certain that there is wear on the rollers (mine had significant wear) so it is worth replacing the whole unit to save having to do it again - you can use the KTM part which is significantly cheaper.
