748 Sprag Clutch Replacement

  1. So what is the 'secret' on keeping the 'washer' central between the flywheel and the crank shaft when refitting it all?

I've been told its not just important but vital to getting it right.

  2. Yep. It HAS to be seated correctly. I build the whole flywheel assembly, sprag clutch and starter gear in hand, insert the central bearing sleeve in the needle bearing and using thick grease, stick the shim in place over what protrudes of the spacer. Then place the whole assembly on the crank. Once it’s on, the splines will need aligning, be careful but firm and don’t pull the assembly back. Once it’s on, the starter idler will need a little bit of wriggling to engage with the sprag gear. Then tighten it all up.
Try it a few time and get a feel for it. It sounds more involved than it is. The grease is the key.

  3. Put the engine on it's side also helps :)
