996 Sprocket Carrier

Discussion in '748 / 916 / 996 / 998' started by Cream_Revenge, Jan 20, 2016.

  1. Hey
Do all carriers fit all sprockets? Or do JT not fit Rental but will fit Spider, etc, etc?

    TIA

  2. They don't all fit each other.

  3. Thanks, should have guessed that would be to easy.

  4. JT and Rental are interchangeable.

  5. Sorry -dont know them.

  6. me neither, which is always a slight concern.

    Thx

  7. If you mean quick change then no, Talon are totally different to Rehthal etc. If you mean a stock carrier then any aftermarket sprocket should fit but if you have the circlip type earlier carrier then some sprockets are not the correct thickness to get the circlip back on.

There are some really poor quality sprockets about on the cheap end of the market.

  8. Soz-thought you meant the quick release thungy.

  9. I have JT carrier on the 1098 and Renthal on the 916 and the sprockets will swop
I also have a Talon on the MV that will only take Talon
But none of them would fit that carrier.
You would be stuck getting its own sprockets

I got my JT sprockets carrier and Triple S chain for £150 from I think Ducatimondo on e bay

  10. These guys?
Chain & Sprocket kit & Billet Carrier 15/40 for Ducati 996 | eBay
15/40 should be good, more effect than 14T F and less risk of wear on the engine, or so i read.

  11. That looks very similar to a Talon carrier so you may find those sprockets will fit. If you use a Renthal or Talon carrier then you sometimes find spare rear sprockets coming up on eBay. Very useful for playing around with gearing for road or track.

I have a decent collection of all sizes most of which were bought this way sometimes for only £5 each. I personally use a Talon carrier for all my bikes

  12. That's not a sprocket carrier, that's the "sprocket flange" that is part of the drive axle.
The cush drives are bolted onto this and it then slots into the eccentric hub. The sprocket carrier (for QR) or sprocket itself then slips onto the cush drives.

There are two widths of these sprocket flanges. The early ones were longer and used an internal circlip, but wear on the circlip grove made them back out and the cush drives would eat into the eccentric adjuster and then into your hub... this happened on my 748!
The later 998 design was two piece; the flange was shorter and came with a bearing spacer and this meant that they didn't wear and back out.

  13. So this would work with the OEM sprockets then?

  14. Ps, I missed the eBay one that went for £20 anyway as was in a meeting.

  15. Yes it would.

The advantage of a Quick Release sprocket carrier and sprocket is that the carrier is the bit that fits onto the flange, then the sprocket onto the carrier. This way you don't have to remove the sprocket flange (and undo the sprocket side nut and disassemble) to change sprockets. The sprocket just gets removed from the carrier and slips over the flange.
