Can I could ask a favour from those of you familar with 98 996SPS bikes please? Im looking to bid on this but can not see it in person. Have been reading as much as I can but still have so much to learn so looking for some help if possible. The obvious key issue I can see with this bike is the incorrect forks although stock ones come with it. Seat cover is another obvious issue. For those of you familar with the 1998 996SPS is there anything else that doesnt ring true? Bike has approx 10k KMs on it. Thanks in advance for all and any help.
Photos aren't much to go on, but check computer under seat, check for twin ignition pickups and head casting should not have DOHC cast in if it's an SPS. On the good side, the connecting exhaust pipes look correct, and it's a mono rear subframe.. If your after a standard SPS there are other little bits e.g. footrests that look aftermarket.
You could get £1500 back for those forks which look way to high. Nice STM rear sprocket carrier means one less thing to worry about. Has a few after market mods but looks better for it.
Mine too. This bike looks genuine as far as I can see, bar the forks and the seat as already mentioned.
I thought the 916SPS had 3 spokes and the 996 had 5 spokes. Of course I suppose it also depended on what Giuseppe had in the parts box at the time, same as with the carbon parts....
that model year had those dark anthracite wheels fitted, i remember lusting after one on display when i ordered my first 996 in 2000
Check the engine casing behind the vertical cylinder is the best place to look, it should be rough / textured as SPS is a sand cast mould. Standard 996 engine is smooth paint finish, 2 injectors per throttle body on 996 and SPS but controlled by different ECU, don’t think the SPS which is powered by a P8 has any ID on it,, but if you can see 1.6M on the ECU it’s wrong, 50mm headers not 45mm , V5 will also state SPS
Cheers everyone. Have put in a max bid for the dealer auction today. Wont know until late this afternoon here in Japan if I own it or not. Thanks for the help!
