St3 Oil Filter Removal

  1. This is the first time that I have gone to change the filter on this bike and my tool that is fine on my Monster and ST2 does not fit! I have only 8 flutes and I think that I need this tool:

Trouble is that it is just over £40 and I only need it once. If I use K & N (that have a nut) or genuine then the filters will have more flutes and my tool will fit.

I've got a strap removal tool that broke the strap (a combination of an old tool and a tight filter).

Anyone got any suggestions? I shall check if the owners club has the tool.

  3. None really. That's the mad thing. I don't know where the previous owner got this filter from. I have never seen an 8 flute Ducati Filter before..

  4. I wasn't sure if such a tool would fit. There isn't much of the oil filter visible as it is in it's own little housing. But if this fits a ST4 then I would imagine that it is OK on a ST3. Do you use it to tighten the filter or just remove it? I would prefer to use K & Ns but I've been sitting on lots of money in Riders vouchers, I'm think of using it up and that would mean OE filters.

  5. Thanks. I've found the tool that I pictured on ebay from a genuine UK supplier for £25 odd. That is more expensive than your option and so I will have a think and wait for your picture.

I'm taking the bike to France next week and I might just do an oil change but I guess that it is better to do the job properly. I bought the ST3 last year and I dunno when the filter was last changed. Usually on my bikes, I always change the filter with the oil because in the general scheme of things, it is not a major expenditure.

  6. Poole-Cherbourg and hen down to the South side of Brittany near St Nazaire. I love France and so I am really looking forward to it. This will be my first long jaunt on the ST3. In France, I do respect the speed limits in towns and villages (roughly) but I don't have to worry in the country. No points and the worst that can happen is a fine but the coppers will be in the villages. I know that the speed cameras don't hurt as they don't bother chasing up Brits. Happy days!

  7. Found this on ebay:

  8. Oil filter off now. It managed to break two cheapo removal tools! I was going to get this next: upload_2018-9-22_16-52-49.png
V-Ten motorcycles have something similar and they got it off in a minute. Now the bike has a Ducati filter on that we did up with my 12 flute tool. Hopefully that is the end of it now. Just doing an oil change and I'll clean the gauze filter as well. As the bike has not yet done 10k miles, I hope everything will be clean!

  9. Mine came from China via eBay, it was in a box, opened the box, and I kid you not it’s gift wrapped in selophane with red silk ribbon, with a personalised hand written note in perfect English thanking me profusely for buying from them and a Chinese proverb to bring me good luck, it’s also top quality with a substantial stiffening plate where the socket drive fits, it arrived in less than a week and cost about £3, British industry doesn’t stand a chance does it, we may as well give up!.
