i have 2001 ST4S , I’m experiencing starting issues , it never has statarted first time but usually on the secound attempt . Now it’s the third or fourth attempt . I would appreciate any help or guidance on this issue or any recommendation on a good mechanic who knows his STs even if I have to get the bike transported .
Ducati John in Leeds...Ducati specialist who rides st's, top man. However there is a micro relay left side fairing (Sat on the bike) that causes loads of grief....really cheap to replace too.
Once you have got it started, does it run well? Also, once warmed up and you cut the engine. Is it easy to start then?
Thank you for your replies and recommendations, yes once it’s started it runs with no issues and yes when you cut the engine it usually takes a couple of attempts to restart Would it be possible to pass on Ducati Johns details please
Nearer to you will be Lougi Moto in Somerset - but still a trip from Cornwall. Probably worth a call to see what Richard thinks. It might be worth telling him about the problem and just getting a service to rule out the simple stuff. If it is anything more them he will be able to advise.
Just a minute. I've been in this situation with an ST4 and sorted it. What you need is a set of battery cables from Exact Start. Otherwise known as Exige on this forum. You change the skinny old standard battery cables for the beefed up set and it starts first touch. Easy job, just follow the instructions that come with the leads. It's a joy when you merely touch the button and the bike fires into life. No mechanic needed.
Yes! Buy a new AGM Yuasa with your Halfords trade card at the same time and you won't believe how fast your motor spins and starts
Too right. My 999 was a very reluctant starter and I always had a worry that I was going to get stranded somewhere. Not any more - first time, every time now. Best money I've spent on the bike.
I've just replaced the battery on the ST3 with an Exide one because the last one couldn't hold enough charge to start the bike after an hour or so with the parking lights. I am taking it to France next month and wondering about putting the Exact kit on it.
It’s just a matter of replacing the bulbs with led equivalents. Autobulbs on line or Halfords should have them
Poor starting is a known issue on the ST4S. Upgrading the starter wires helps things but the underlying problem is the ECU mapping. A tuning contact in Germany created 2 modded maps to solve the problem. It is trial and error to see which one improves the starting. He shared the maps with me so I may be able to help.
Spoke to Ducati John ref my starting issue , most grateful for his feed back and knowledge . Also thank you for your comments
Starter leads ordered - although I've not got any problems, it can't hurt. As far as the LED bulb thing goes, I'll look into replacing the bulbs...
