I am thinking of signing up to a Starlink Roam contract as campsite wifi is pants and 5G/4G phone signal is often non-existent in rural areas or too weak to stream media. I also tend to take work with me when I go vanlifing and it's a pain when I can't get online. What are the pros and cons please? I assume I need the Starlink Mini "dish" rather than the Standard? Does it need to be mounted on the roof of my motorhome or can I leave it on the dash, so long as it can see the sky out of the windscreen? Thanks

I've browsed a few threads on relevant forums but I haven't found an answer to my dashboard question and it's always good to get up to date views. As the "Mini" can be taken with you attached to a backpack (see pic) I think it's a reasonable assumption to make that it doesn't need to be roof mounted but it's best to make sure. How the dish is powered when used like that is anyone's guess, but this is all part of the voyage of discovery on which I have embarked.....
Just having a read up on these and the mini has built in wifi router, the stuff I’ve read says if mounted outside the wifi signal may be poor due to the built in router so that suggests it’s meant to be used indoors.
As Nasher mentions, motorhomefun is a good source of info. Been considering one myself and recall a thread on the forum where it had been used in the dashboard. Also where had been permanently mounted, believe had replaced old mifi antennas. Think the correct thread is below. All done. It was a bit tricky finding a spot where the “dish” has a clear 110 degree view of the sky as my place is bounded by a very tall hedge, but I climbed a bit and got it onto a flat roof. Once I’d sorted that out, the rest of the setup including setting up an account, signing up to a price plan (Roam 50: 50GB p/m for £50 p/m) and buying a cigarette lighter power supply took less than 5 minutes. So far, so good. Here are the performance metrics.
Trying to persuade my boss to give us this in Nigeria. WiFi is often flaky at best and uploading/downloading files is impossible. Will follow with interest
