My sister in law is considering applying for her bike licence. She is a complete novice in the world of biking and so has asked for my advice as to which bike would make the best starter. When I was her age (30's) I was a 900ss rider, so I'm a bit out of touch with all things 'learner'. She's over in Ireland where the law might be different to here in regards to what level of training is required and what CC she can ride. Any pointers I can pass on would be greatly appreciated.
400cc Scrambler. It's fun, it's cool, it's not a complicated machine and it's not got too much horse power to scare the crap out of you. Andy
Hmm can u honestly say it's a starter bike? I'm not doubting it's a nice engine and doesn't scare u but the general ergonomics may well be intimidating. I would say Monster 696, superb bikes!
I had a 696 monster, great bike as a first one. Easy to ride & fairly cheap to maintain but still looks cool
When I saw you had posted a reply I mistakenly thought ah, exige, he'll have a few positive words or wisdom to chip in .. But sadly no... Just plain mean..
Assuming you mean the South there's stuff here on the test and IBT (their CBT) - RSA.ie - The Motorcycle Test By starter bike I take it you mean before she has a full license. She can ride any bike as long as it's restricted and she can afford the insurance. Whoever runs the IBT will give her advice on starter bikes. I passed my test 40 years ago so I'm not exactly current, but I'd go 2nd hand 125 just to get through the test then move up from there. I had a M696+ and it was an excellent bike with easy to manage power, but I also had a Suzuki SV650 which is a lot cheaper, a bit softer and just as much fun. Depends on her budget. Keep in mind that either of these bikes has the potential to scare the living shit out of a novice so maybe go for an intermediate or run them restricted until she gets her confidence.
Seriously though, if its to be a Ducati, I'd say a Scrambler. Cool looking bike, seems light and controllable. Lots sold and I've not seen any bad reports.
Maybe not so Ducati, something she won't mind dropping! I'm thinking that's the reality of the situation. Budget, restricted, first bike. Don't want to scare the bejesus out of her! But would like to encourage her.
I went from a 250LC in 1981 on my 17th Birthday to a Z1000 Kawasaki within 3 months and had turbo charged it within 2 years
