Starter Cable Upgrade

Discussion in 'Sport Classic' started by David Hales, Jan 18, 2018.

  1. Ok is it worth it on a GT1000, I am sure I read somewhere it didnt work to well on this bike?

  2. have done it on my 748 and 900 ss, both have benefited greatly from the upgrade. Can't imagine why the gt1000 wouldn't unless it came out with better than normal Ducati tat!

  3. I had this message a wile ago from another member, that will remain nameless

David. A couple tips.....check out the wasp puk induction upgrade ,there is a write up on the sc section also I tried fitting the hi cap upgrade ie the battery wires and earth replacement and the bike ran crap so be careful with this. It was as if all the power went to the starter and not enough to the fuel injection making starting a bastard

  5. Must have been the same guy who posted something similar on he forum a few months back.
Makes no sense to me. The lower resistance of the high cap cables means less current gets wasted in producing heat in the cables, so more current is available for both starting and ignition circuits.
When I fitted my hi cap kit, I did find I needed to fit a new battery to get the full benefit. With the old battery there was a real and worthwhile improvement but when teamed up with a new AGM Yuasa, the difference was incredible.

  6. old rider is totally correct. thinner wires have greater losses in that specific part of the system. their reduced resistance would have no effect on other equipment (unless your battery is already on its way, in which case it wil have an effect across the entire electrical system with thin or thick cables).

the thin cables will likely draw more current but waste it in resistive losses.

also, to replace and clean up all connector areas makes a very big difference, as high resistance at contact points causes volt drop across the contact and hence less voltage is seen at the starter contacts and that will push less current through the starter.

new larger diameter cables with clean connectors with good contact areas WILL improve starting and WILL NOT detriment other electrical/electronic parts of the system.

  7. Not sure how many kit's I have sold now - but cetrtainly hundreds with only great feedback which many will have read on here.

The prototype Sport Classic Kit was fitted to a bike that for some unknown reason ran rough until swapped back - it span up fine but had an issue which is really beyond electrical science if the cables caused it. (unless @AirCon or anyone else can shed any light) i.e. there is no known reason how the could have been the route cause. It is a mystery.

Many Sport Classic kits have been sold since with no issues and all my own and California Cycleworks products are warranted anyway.

The Sport Classic kit was enjoyable to work on due to the complexity of the terminal design - this to allow fitment with no modification to the fully enclosed battery box. The 2 terminals alone were initially quoted to me from my specialist manufacturer at an astronomical price which would have pushed the kit price up towards the US kit prices! It took a lot of haggling to get them back down to enable me to get a reasonable price point.

Here is the Sport Classic Kit: the last picture shows the un-plated prototype terminal fitment (production are tin plated) at the battery box.

  9. Got a lithium jmc (the black ones with the red top) on my hyper....been on there for the last year or so....no problems atall....they do an additional Bluetooth monitor so you can check the voltage too...

  10. Yuasa Glass Matt Battery :) should be available from Halfords with the Forum Discount too.

  11. How do you do the discount?

  12. If you pay the full subscription of £15 for the forum you get a Halfords Trade Card.
You might be able to upgrade if you paid £5 but need to ask @Rob
Many have saved lots with Halfords since the offer.

  13. The halfords card is £15. Stop offering discounts on stuff that is not your concern or under your control. Stick to selling belts :)

  14. It was my bike wouldnt start correctly....with the upgrade it turned over faster but didnt want to start and seemed to flood then start with a bang. No idea why? The kit itself is well made and thought out but for some reason just didnt work on my bike, it was almost as if all the power was going to the starter but not to the injection or the spark and took several goes to start.it could have even been the power commander not suiting the upgrade, iv no idea, but once i returned to the old cadles it was back to normal.id love someone to try them on their bike with success .

  15. Bully - he's a subscriber and Rob upgraded initially so I asked him to ask Rob...

    Bully :sob:

  16. And the halfords card is still £15 over and above normal subscription. It's not your concern.

  17. It was good working with you on the fitment too, a very neat installation :):upyeah:it is indeed a mystery. Just checked and I've sold 9 Sport Classic Kits so far with no issues. And never an issue on any other model with around 25 kits available.

  18. House Sale? :worried:

  19. And if you can't save your £15 back then you have a serious problem as the trade discount is mega.

    Huge fan of this perk!

  20. Oh and as exige says the kit is really well made and thought out so you dont have to alter anything permanently to install, so youv nothing to lose by trying it and everything to gain.
