Hi, Any ideas on starter motor brush life? my 2012 Hyper evo has done 35,000 now & starting is not good, done cables & battery, maybe brushes need replacing?
I don't know what the typical starter motors life is like but my 916 is 18 yrs old and has done 46,000 miles and still on the original which works perfectly.
Just take the end plate off and clean the commutator with some very fine wet and dry. Clean the grooves between the copper bits with a tooth pick and put it back together. The brushes will be fine. I have done both the wife's BMW F800 (12000 miles) and my spare ST2 (30+k miles) recently and it has made a huge difference to both bikes. There are pictures of the job on the ST2 on my blog below.
I didn't need to change the ones in my 916bip which did 45,000 miles in the 7 years I had it, and I don't recall touching the ones in my 1994 900SS in 21 years and 60,000 miles either. I have done the ones in the SPS probably at around 30,000 miles - as Bob says there is no need to remove the starter to give the comm. a clean, or even to replace them if necessary,
Changed them in my '00 SSie last year 30,000 miles. CG125 brushes(i think) filed down and a gasket, total cost about £10. Tried doing it in situ but reassembly is a bit tricky so ended up taking it off as oil change was due anyway.
