Any tricks for holding the brushes in? The brush plate is obscured by the end cap that has to stay there due to the +ve bolt. Thought about cotton thread but some will probably get left inside and might fk it up. It's fiddly enough lining all the bits together without the brushes. Can't really figure out how to put it back together easily even if motor was off the bike?
Mine was off the bike, but I thought the end part went back on quite easily.......I think I managed to push the brushes back with a thin rigid plastic rod and eased them over one at a time with the cap at a slight angle.......
Taking start motor out now. It was getting too frustrating working under bike with field magnets pulling brush plate around etc. drained oil and alt cover came off easy.
Easy easy off the bike. Fitted the brush plate then the terminal post. Spotted the magnet casing marks that line up on the inner bearing case. Jobs a goodun, working motor, need gasket and filter to complete. Cheers Al.
Do you think the earthing arrangement is good enough? Or would it be feasible to improve it by substituting some more substantial components, with thicker metal?
Depends what you mean Pete..........It seems to me the case of the starter is earthed by being bolted to the engine casting, so I doubt that can be improved. The end cap is a bit tinny though, but unless rust gets between the starter body and the end cap, then I reckon it is probably sufficiently earthed. However, earth straps from the battery to frame and engine are a bit lightweight, but if they are clean and the contacts are good, there shouldn't be an earthing problem.
