Starter Solenoid?

  1. M1200 19,000 miles, just very reluctant cold starting, so a new battery installed; still reluctant, but once started, warm and hot starts no problem. Example: 4 hours riding riding with 5 restarts on Friday, no problem. Saturday no start, even after battery charged full on Optimate.

Battery and earth cable connections cleaned and retightened. Started after 3 attempts, so recharge battery and fingers crossed for Sunday.

Sunday morning: engine turns slowly once or twice, then a lot of clicking, turns once or twice more, then clicking etc and repeat. Rest and repeat: same deal. No start. and swearing.

I'm thinking solenoid, but are the cables or starter motor/connections suspect on these?

  2. Make sure your battery is fully charged.
Then run a jumper cable from the battery negative to a good earth on the engine. Does starting improve?
If so, buy an off the shelf earth cable and run it from the battery negative to one of the exposed starter motor bolts. That should improve things.

  3. I had a starter solenoid fail on a 796 hyper i had.

If the motor swung over it would start but when solenoid started playing up, it was just click and nothing else. It worked, then didn't, then did etc.

It gave up the ghost when i put it away in the garage coming back from a trip.... Very lucky
