Starting issues

  1. My Multi seems to have trouble starting mostly cold but sometimes hot.
I have replaced the leads with Motolectric ones. I have a LeoVince decat and FatDuc.

It started ok this morning, in the garage, cold but after work this evening I went through 5 starting cycles before I fired up.
    Any ideas?

  2. I would bet its the usual battery low/ knackered or poor earth connection.

My money is the battery just needs a charge. Dont try and start it connected to an optimate.

  3. I keep the bike on a trickle charger.
It's an 09 bike and still has the original battery.

As for earth, I changed the whole earth system to motolectric about 5 weeks ago. The connections were cleaned up during that process.

  4. Checked your fuel pump relay for corrosion? Battery Terminals tight?

Hmm, fresh fuel and fuel filter? No blockages in the breather pipes?

Other than that I would check all the fuses and maybe change the plugs?

There are loads of reasons why it could struggle and a compression test would be a good check if you are non the wiser. Maybe have it looked at if the obvious doesnt do the trick?

    Hope you get it sorted.

Oh and I was always lead to believe that trickle chargers kill batteries but opinion seems to sway on this.

  5. Thanks for the advice. Where is the starter relay please?

  6. Sorry I meant fuel pump relay

  7. On the 749 its behind the battery box so im sure its probably the same or simar on your multi. People always say to listen and check it is priming but if the relay is going it tends to slow down a bit first. Its only a 5 quid part so always worth checking. Any sign of corrosion and I would change it. Bit of wd on the connector might help.

  8. Cool thanks.

7 cycles on the starter this morning, before she started.

Frustrating, not to say embarrassing especially when it won't start at work, a police station car park

  9. Frustrating, as you say Pete. It could be battery as said, 3 years is sometimes all they are good for and it's cold starting problems that are the first symptom. Do you think the churn speed has got any slower from say a year ago? I wonder if just a general tune would do it if you haven't had one recently. I don't know how different your Multi is, but basically plugs, air bleeds,TPS. Does yours have an ECU trimmer for mixture and when was the Fuel filter last changed?

I supposed any temp sensors or circuitry could be relevant here?

  10. Oooh.

The bike doesn't seem slower on turnover.

I have a fatduc fitted for lambda sensor adjustment following decat. There are air/fuel mixture screws on the engine.

Don't know when fuel filter was changed (don't know where it is!)

As for tune up. I have no idea.

  11. Ok so to start, ill change the battery.

Recommendations please? I have been looking at Li-ion batteries but eBay have them for £149!

The other options are Gel, lead acid or traditional wet battery.

  12. The battery is a Gel type. YB12B-BS is the OE but you may see YB replaced with YT, or CB for instance....depends on manufacturer. Any decent brand would do. Yuasa, Varta, Unibat, BS are the popular ones. There's a lot of new tech coming thru and the prices are falling...half hour with Google should enlighten you

  13. Thanks nelly, will have a look tonight.

  14. i turn it on wait few seconds until clocks have done every thing, press button and give throttle blip after nano second starts first time every time ,i hold throttle at 2,000 rpm

  15. I'm just about to leave work so I will try that.

Thanks for all your help guys.

It's bloody frustrating to have such a nice bike and having it play up like this!!

  16. Battery change today. Managed to pick up a CT12B-4 for £40. Apparently it's the same battery.

    Let's see how it goes.

  17. Make sure you charge it up first! Got my fingers crossed for you.

  18. Thanks. Thought they were dry charged already? Will stick it on the optimate then.

  19. They are but its still best to make sure its topped up first as there is no gurantee its at full charge.
