Starting Massive Clunk

Discussion in 'Technical Help' started by paulfastbikes, Dec 16, 2014.

  1. 03 multi massive snatch clunk on first attempt to start ,then usually starts second attempt ,,it had new brushes 2 year ago no other issues, do i need new starter motor ?

  2. Sprag clutch

  3. As above

  4. Sprag of despair and/or the starter gear of doom :(

  5. It's yer sprag alright. I'll give you £50 for the rest of the bike...

  6. Is it going to be expensive then i'm presuming

  7. sprag yes but its normal with a low battery.

as long as its not doing it every time just ride it.

best way of avoiding problems is to only start it when planning on going for a ride and making sure the battery is full before you hit the button.

My bet just a low battery.

  8. Different bike i know, but my 996 has been doing it for well over 18 months.
I've heard £400 banded about the forum as a rough repair price but i don't know if that's garage price or doing it at home.

  9. I wouldn't just ride it.If you do the starter gear and flywheel will also require replacing along with the sprag clutch.Trust me I know and yes the three parts were about £400 new from ducati.

Hense now id get the repair done asap while its just the sprag.

  11. There's plenty of sprag clutches on eBay for about £100. Dunno what the new from Ducati price is on its own but at that price if your handy with the spanners it's a no brainer from what Matt#Corse says. I'm too tight though so next time I'm down Bristol way I'll pop in Louigi Moto and see if there's a good used one knocking about I could nab cheap. He's good like that our Rich. Until then it's keep my battery topped up and fingers crossed.

  12. if its the sprag clutch eventually it will fail and the bike won't start
best not leave it as sometimes when they fail they shed the little balls and wire all over the engine

check all your earth connections and make sure battery is good to minimise more wear

sprag replace for my 998 was £ 400 (i think about 230 in parts) in late 2012

not worth buying 2nd hand bits of ebay imho, they will most likely be worn ones

  13. The Horror, the horror...:(

My 1098 went, the it went again, did the starter gear at the same time.
Winter seems to bring this fault out.

  14. Im confused here about pricing and repair. The sprag is just the roller bearing right.I deffo didn't pay hundreds of pounds for this new part from Ducati Coventry.

However the worn sprag starts to damage the other two parts pictured and if not caught early will lead to a much higher bill for parts from ducati.Im sure the sprag was like £80.

  15. If caught early or you are very lucky after mine went kapput this summer, a new spring is all you need, bought mine from a guy in Northern Ireland that supplies them new and was about £10. If you have a lightweight flywheel it will easily srip off all the splines.

  16. yes to fix mine was both cogs and the sprag itself too

mine had def stripped the splines, when you hit the starter it would just whirr like a kitchen hand blender

doogalman, do you know which spring?

  17. Probably the one that wraps around the bearing.... There was some debate/confusion over whether the springs available at time where big enough for the new/bigger bearing. IIRC there was also some chat regarding a bearing oil seal spring being a suitable alternative.

  18. Yup the spring that wraps around the sprag. Such a simple part tgat is tge cause of nearly all sprag failures. The spring stretches over years of use and the rollers no longer grip properly.
