Starting/running Issue M1100s

  1. My bike. Monster 1100S 2009 32K km.

    The past few times used its struggled to start from cold, thought it might need a new battery but no, it’s good. When started it idled & ran perfectly and when doing warm starts, always starts as soon as the button is pressed. The latest time it started, eventually, but it turns out it was only running on the H cylinder, the V wasn’t running, at least not all the time judging by the exhaust temp and the fact it bogs down and stalls when trying to pull away :(.

    Plug check, all good, got sparks at all 4.

    V 2 plugs however are bone dry.

    Strip everything down to get to the injectors and remove the V injector. Test it. It fires. Check there’s power to it, seems ok, so now I’m at a bit of a loss:thinkingface:.

    All suggestions welcome.
     
  2. if idle only then throttle body balance and air bleeds worth a check. GWS Electrical/coil side also worth looking at if general running affected - you can always swap injectors and coils H to V if in the mood.

    General running was absolutely fine, just the starting and now the lack of fuel to the V cylinder.

    Open question,
    as a matter of interest, what voltage should I have across the 2 spade sockets that connect to the terminals in the injector? I’m assuming 0v until there’s a pulse, ie instruction, for the injector to open when it would jump to 12v ?

  5. Re: first paragraph, then do look at throttle body balance and air bleeds, you can effectively turn one cylinder off while engine only idling, If these are set incorrectly.

  6. Suggestion. Let me have it for a winter project? I have wotsits but unfortunately no hydraulic oil or mixed bolts as @Harry Bell let me down. :mad:

  7. This sounds like a plan EJ, WCP gets your triumph 765 to trundle about on and you get a project other than your better half’s kitchen build.

    Went out on it today as it was either the 996 or 765 that got the axe so needed to confirm to myself I had done the right thing. God that little triple is such a fun bike.

  9. Nahh, I like my Monster. I think I’ll politely and respectfully decline all offers of exchange, even if only for the winter.

    Will check TB balance and all other connections are intact - there’s a few due to the stepper motor and the fact the air temp sensor is sited in the V cylinder throttle intake body.
