afternoon all, been trying to locate a steel rear 40T sprocket for my 748. Looks like I'm going to have to get a carrier, JT or Talon etc, but there does'nt appear to be a great selection of steel rear sprockets available??? most seem to be alloy or pricy supersprox types? any pointers?? cheers
Never seen a steel sprocket on a carrier tbh. If you're going to invest, Renthal may be a bit more but they do last. The cheaper sprockets can/do wear quicker.
Ducati Performance "Light alloy rear sprockets, hard anodized; they are light and more resistant to wear. They feature 520 pitch and are 6mm thick." for MS2R800, which uses same hub as 748: T=39 96846005B T=40 96846105B T=41 96846205B T=42 96846305B T=43 96846405B "Rear sprockets in Ergal (6mm) for 520-pitch chains family" for 748/916/996/998 in 520 pitch, 6mm thick. T=37 96821901B T=38 96822001B T=39 96822101B T=42 96822401B Good luck trying to get one though!
Yes, 38T is standard for a 748, although the R/RS uses 36T and the SP/SPS uses 37T. Don't forget that if you go for a 14/40 combination you will need a 96 link chain instead of the standard 94 link, otherwise the eccentric hub won't be in the correct position to tighten the chain.
I run one on my 748 with the 14/40 combination - it's so much better than standard! If you get a hard-anodised sprocket it should be more wear resistant than a standard steel sprocket anyway.
just checked out your link, PM with with price inc Uk delivery on carrier with 40T sprocket if you can supply them??? cheers
So do I with 14/40 and 96 links IIRC, AFAM with a hard anodized rear sprocket. Using wurth dry it has done close to 9k miles and there is no hooking on the teeth, the only wear is polishing on the teeth shoulders. When I got them I got two rears as I was only expecting 4k at most before a change and have been pleasantly surprised by the absence of wear which so far has been better than using steel OEM ones (but that was using chain wax). Not sure how much is down to the dry lube or the sprocket but who cares. The rears were £30 each BTW although the carrier quite a bit more, front was £14
hi i have a 2001 748s yellow the best colour i know !!!! just checked my sprockets and they are 14/37 would 14/40 be my best option?
from googling the S appears to have the same motor as the low end B and E models, don't know about the gearbox ratios on the S??, so dont know why its got such high gearing in stock form. 14/37 was a ratio on old jap courier hacks from the 80's, so can only assume its more of a slow speed touring bike set up you have, especially as its yellow as well
Chris, the motors and gearbox are indeed the same. Tony, the bike is really geared for top speed and open road/track use which makes the standard rear just a little bit tall for town driving or easy road use in traffic. 14/40 gives you less top speed but an easier ride in town with a slightly faster pick up through the revs. With standard gearing I remember staying at 30mph can be a dance on the gear lever as it is too snatchy or too revvy. BTW If you get the 40 rear Renthal or AFAM they both offer a free bike respray into red to make the bike go faster to compensate for the lower gearing.
Do all yellow dukes come with anti gravity boots? I know they all get lapped so red bike behind is no surprise.
Ducati geared all the bikes of this era quite high. It was to get them thru noise emissions apparently in the ride by tests. ST4 was geared for close on 190mph iirc... the modern stuff is geared much better now that they've rolled the exhaust valve out. 14/40 works pretty on the 748.......suits the nature of the bike without making it too rev hungry.
sitting on tool kit for the red one:biggrin: just had my stabilisers off!! do all red owners bite so easy me wonders??
 :biggrin: you edder, yellow owners eh??? 14/40 is a good choice by the looks so sell / part ex your fairings for a front sprocket and you'll only have to shell out for a chain and 40T rear then......
Happy this came up, my chain/sprocket combination sounds horrendous at the moment, think the chain is well on the way out. 40t rear sprocket and 96 link chain it is.
