749 Stooopid No Start.

Discussion in '749 / 999' started by bluey, Aug 11, 2016.

  1. So.... The Italian just threw a hissy fit. Totally conked out whilst riding. After a few mins it restarted and after a couple of 100 yards conked out again. Did this for 5 miles or so until I was home. Lucky I was near home as this bike goes everywhere.

When it started I could hear the fuel pump, when there was no start I could hear no fuel pump!

Am I right in thinking I should change that nasty little relay behind the battery?

  2. Would be my first port of call. Any fault codes?

  3. Not checked for codes Chris, no warning light came on though. I have a spare relay somewhere so will strip and plug that in. Whilst I am there I think I will extend the wires so it is protected elsewhere.

  4. Remind me how I check for codes please...

  5. The obd light needs to be on. No light and this does not work. Ign off, hold down left dash button, ign on, keep holding button, EFI appears on dash, keep holding button, codes then display on dash, keep holding button until all scroll.

  6. Whilst you have the back off the battery box check the condition of the small earth lead onto one of the ecu bolts. When you have done the relay relocate it to the to left side of the battery box. Use the Relay Johnny method using a finger off a rubber glove. I'd also check the battery connectors. These are shite, prone to corrosion and breaking.

  7. Thanks.

  8. Ok so I have replaced the relay and the old one has no visible sign of corosion. Is this normal?

I have a new ish loom fitted so that should be all good.

  9. In that case check over your loom installation. In particular the earthing onto engine. Then a case of checking over your connections. Check the wires that go into the fuel pump as this can rub on the vertical cylinder and short circuit. What's the history of the new loom? Did it have an alarm fitted once? Are the bridging repairs sound? Going to take some investigation work.

  10. The loom is a brand new genuine Ducati item. I'll check all the earthing points. Where are they all? Assume fuel pump is inside the tank? I'll check that out too. The loom was fitted around 6 months back by a local bike mech.

  11. The main earth goes to left side of vertical cylinder

  12. Lovely, thanks.

  13. The relay is a small solenoid, so is electro-mechanical with moving parts. In its oem position, it is subject to heat as well as spray etc, so lack of visible corrosion doesn't necessarily mean it's ok.

  14. Lift tank/seat and check plug from pump. Mine hadnt been pushed home after a service and caused intermittent cutting out.

  15. OK so checked all of the above and they all look good so I'll take it for a spin in the morning and see what's what.

  16. OK, mt patience has run out, this fucking Ducati is a piece of shit. Just failed an MOT because it has fried its light bulbs AGAIN and to top it off has has left me stranded on the way home. An absolute joke of engineering.

who wants a bike before I set it alight, and I am serious.

    Boom!

  17. I have calmed down a bit lol.

If I rock the bike back and forth to the bike will start without the pump priming, but for only a few seconds. I have heard the pump do a 'mini' prime so I am confident that is the circuit that is fuckied.

Can anyone help me diagnose it so I can repair and get it sold?

  18. I can't, but you've had 0 luck with that bike. Feel for ya.

  19. I have started a thread in Technical' too. Been through the electrics and cant see anything obvious. If you think you can help please check the other thread.

I am at a loss now, and I have no idea where to check next.

I have ordered a new fuel pump and checked the pump assembly. The filter was changed in June.
