Streetfighter Is Unwell

Discussion in 'Streetfighter' started by Welsh SF, Jun 18, 2014.

  1. Just turned 10k miles on my 848 streetfighter with no major problems, and this is my 4th Ducati over 10 years from a 98 916 to my current sf with no real issues with any of them.

Just turned into my street the night before last and the engine management light came on and the bike started missing badly. I have an error code of 10.2 which apparently means the front coil is grounding to earth. I've looked about on the forums and checked the relays, fuel pump is priming, taken the coil out and there's no corrosion or dirt in the hole.

Any ideas? Should I buy a new coil? Or should I take the tank off, swap the coils around first? And if so is the tank easy to get off?

I've taken previous bikes apart but not really touched this yet.

  2. Buy a new relay first and replace the old one

  3. I wish it was only multistradas :(

  4. Chrisw,

Which relay should I change, all three appear ok, the two outside ones have the same numbers on them?

  5. The one that causes the most problems is the coil/injector/pump. This one relay feeds 3 systems. Even though it may look OK, replace it. They are cheap from your Ducati dealer but I buy mine here 4 Pin 'Normally Open' contact MICRO Relay - 20A | eBay

I would replace all the relays at the same time. Really they should be a service item.

  6. I've probably jinxed myself now for my Wales trip this weekend

Done 15k now on mine and no issues - although I have blown a few fuses

  7. Thanks a lot, will replace all 3 and see what happens.

    Char,

I jinxed myself on Monday on another forum that were discussing unreliable panigales in general about my great experiences with ducatis, less than 24 hours later it's knackered. Good luck with your trip, hopefully you will be fine

Where are you planning to go in Wales?, some great roads here

  8. Royal Oak in Rhandirmwyn - cant pronounce it when I'm sober lol

Normally go to Lambister - yes very nice roads although not been in the summer so I guess a bit busier !

  9. Nowhere near me, I ride around South Wales most of the time, but have ridden up around Newtown area, the A483 is good. Enjoy :)

  10. Disappointingly, I've just replaced all three relays and it's still not right.

When I switch the ignition on, there is a click from one of the relays, then the fuel pump and what must be the exhaust valve motor prime, then another click as the engine management light comes on

Any ideas would be really welcome

  11. Yes, swapping them over can be tomorrow's project. Tank looks easy enough, 1 bolt like the 916 unless I'm mistaken. There are a couple of coils on ebay but from the states, and there's no guarantee they are any good. I've seen them on an Italian site new for 93 euros, but if I can prove that's the problem and they are not ridiculously prices from Ducati then I'll probably just buy one.

I may be wrong, but when I took the coil out the other night the cable is very tight as it is cable tied in place. In march, the bike was serviced including plugs and the ties don't look like they were replaced, they could well have pulled the wires leading to this problem.

    Thanks for your help

  12. I recently bought a coil from ducatiparts-online on ebay. Postage was 2 days from Netherlands and item was as new!

  13. Thanks JC, I was considering them and a good recommendation helps. Did you have a similar fault code?

    • Thanks Thanks x 1
  14. Oh ive been very busy recently sorting out all the little niggles my bike has had for the past couple of years.....

  15. Coil is £81, a lot better than I was expecting :), need to check it first

  16. I paid 60 delivered.

People will show you pairs of coils for little money but for me its about condition.

At the end of the day its still a saving over new.

  17. For the sake of £20, and the fact I can pick it up on the way home from work, new sounds good. Particularly if they are known to be unreliable.

Really appreciate the input though, its a great place to seek advice. Just need to pull my finger out now and swap them over to make sure that's the fault.

  18. 81 quid is good. I thought they were about 140

  19. I was thinking about the same as you, but rang riders this morning. Years back I bid up to £50 on a back light for my single seat unit on a 916, I got outbid, rang ducati and it was about £30 new.
