I fancy a SF to commute on and comparing it to getting the train is how i'm justifying it to myself. What would the general consensus be on here to this? I was going to go for a new 848 with Termi's as i'd decided this was enough for me - 3 grand down and £189 a month. However there is a 1098 one with just shy of 4k miles on it for 9k - 2 grand down and £136 a month. 1098 owners, do you think it would be a bit overkill as a commuter? How are they on fuel? I currently commute on a 749 and fill this up every other day, depending on how i ride. Thanks.
I find my street fighter more comfy than my multistrada. Just can't fit as much luggage on it. I did change the bars which made a huge difference. I get around 120 miles before the res light comes on. You will have to feather the clutch in traffic which can be a bit frustrating. You'll have the biggest grin on your face every morning you arrive at work. Go for it.
Thanks Phill, just what i wanted to hear really. I'm guessing the tank is quite a size as 120 miles would be about 4 days worth of commuting.
Ive got a 1098 Sf and find any sort of town /slower work a bit tiring on it , the clutch is heavy ,your leg position are quite up and back , they dont like going slow , fantastic on the open back roads though
Remember 848 wet clutch a lot lighter, but you can have aftermarket slave to help make the 1098 less heavy
How much of your commute is fast roads, and how much is stop/start heavy traffic? Do you have a secure place to leave the bike when you get there?
There is a bike bay right next to the property I am based at. It's 50/50 really with motorway to town riding. The 749 is great for most of it, having the fairings. Just need reliability.
848 is probably easier to tame for commuting duty. On mine (for sale!) I fitted an Oberon, levers and different bars and this made the clutch a lot easier, I didn't need to drop a tooth up front. The comfort DP seat helps as well. The 848 has slightly better spaced foot pegs as well so with the wet clutch probably a better commute bike for traffic. Also, I had Termis with the ECU which I think makes fuelling low down better. That said, a 1098 SF is a very cool bike.
I went to Ducati Aylesbury today and put money down on the 1098 SF I had been looking at online. Sat on it and was very comfortable, but also quite alien as couldn't see the front wheel - quite different to my 749. Steve in the showroom started it up and my little girl burst into tears. It has Akrapovic cans on it and sounded beautiful. Has anyone else got these? I always felt if you have a Ducati you can only have Termis but the Akra's do look and sound good. It's funny with bikes as the 1098 SF is more bike than I have ever had before and is more than likely way more capable than I am as a rider, yet I did ponder do I go for an S if I can find one, for the Ohlins alone (as I like how they look). Mad really.
Fit some higher rizoma bars for more comfort and makes it much easier to manouver round town. Also get the fuelling sorted. Ask chrisw or buy a Tuneboy However for commuting I might have gone with a Monster
I've had one previously though, although far different to the ones of today it's nice to change models. What is the chance of my DP 749 tank bag fitting the SF? Does anyone here have both and can compare tanks?
Is it magnetic? My old multi one fitted my 848 and the new multi, well enough to use anyway, as its strapped on and tank similar overall shape
It is magnetic, but from memory the magnets are right in the corners of the 'points' of the 749 tank. These are the ones I fear may miss the sf's tank.
