1198 Stupid Exhaust Question Maybe, But...

  1. hi all,
I've got a 12 plate 1198, and I'm thinking of treating him a little. So, silly question time please!
If I was to get a full Termi' system, would it need the air filter and ecu?
If I was to get a pair of end cans (only), again, would it need a new air filter and ecu?
I must say I'm not looking for ultimate bhp gains, but heard (friend of a friend myth?) that'd make the low to mid range much more pleasant to use!? I'm also curious about the valve in the exhaust system. I couldn't be living with a warning light on all the time, but I suspect that's not an issue with cans only?
    Thanks!

(Edit to say he's totally standard at the mo'!)

  2. Some run aftermarket cans only, without an ECU map, I did but left the standard filter in to avoid it running to lean. Then I got it remapped anyway and changed the exhaust.

Full system you definitely will need remap and air filter and your 'Throttle position Sensor' reset.

Changing exhausts is good though, definitely helps a little with heat and the bike responds well to a remap

  3. So if I got a new Ducati 'race ecu', and exhaust cans with filter I'd be ok? Would the fact the exhaust still having a valve in be a problem?
Again, sorry for the silly questions. I'm after restoring the mid rangei m told the standard exhausts struggle with, while not causing him to run lean or show a warning on the dash!
I wouldn't mind a bit more noise, but that's not the main objective...

  4. My bike was like this when i bought it; i wouldn't recommend it. Mine developed a mind of its own (revving at lights), would get seriously hot, and ran like shit too below 3k rpm - was farting and stuttering to a point of cutting out all the time.

  5. I should have been more clear, mine ran fine but only until I got it remapped which I was going to do anyway, as pavey says it could be all over the shop, although it sounds like his tps was out.

In answer to your question, the dp air filter is only something like £25 so just get one ordered up then remap it according to the exhaust.

The valve stays in for just slip on pipes but the ECU remap disables it if u have an aftermarket tube done on the bike, this will spin it to the fully open position for all riding. Not sure whether the Ducati race ECU does this.

Full system completely junks the valve.

Btw, if u don't have a race ECU, my advise would be to get the pipes fitted and the filter and then ride it gently to a pro like Moto rapido or cjs in Bristol and get it remapped properly. It will cost £300-400 but will be perfect for your bike and yes, you will probably get 5-7hp all through the mid range with a full system and proper map

  6. The valve is very easy to disable and a small electronic box to replace the valve motor is cheap off ebay and saves some weight. No errors on my bike since doing the mod. Have a look at my blog below and you will see how it was done, complete with photos.

  7. My advice would be to get the end cans fitted and send your ECU off to Chrisw on here. He can reflash it for you for the new cans and this will disable the exhaust valve. I think this would be the cheapest and best way to go. But there really isn't any substitute for a full system. ;)

  8. However he will then need to get a local Ducati trained tech to reset the TPS. Which isn't a big deal but will need doing

  9. True. Forgot about that. Good excuse to get the software and leads. :)

  10. I use tuneecu for Android to reset the TPS, service reminder etc; very straight forward.

  11. Same here ... tuneEcu is great

  12. Rather than buying ecu, as guys say get the ecu remapped and set up by a specialist on a Dyno can recommend moto rapido

  13. If your looking to buy new both kits comes with the ecu and filter and the full system looks the dogs

  14. I've bought a new Termi exhaust (end cans only) and it comes with new ecu and air filter. Is this simply plug and play? No warning lights or remapping needed?
    Thanks all!

  15. at most I think you need to just get the Throttle position sensor reset at a dealer, which will be about £20 i think..

You might find it runs a little odd until then, also it might stall at lights. so i would fit it all and get your local guys to just do the reset.
